There is an old mechanics saying "if it isn't broke - don't fix it." Improving something, and making it better should not CAUSE more or different problems. Logic (I'm sorry I have to resort to this) would suggest if you make a change to something that creates a problem the change should include a diagnostic to find the problem and offer a direct straight forward solution.

When YouTube says "an error occurred"- - -WHAT ERROR? Obviously it knows one occurred - which one. Every browser knows (or should) that people use it to go to YouTube to watch videos. Thousands of browsers, thousands of platforms, who knows how many operating systems, etc... the "Major players" could, I donno, maybe talk to each other to address what seems to be a CONSTANT PROBLEM ?

Am asked by Firefox if I want to report crashes and other problems so you can make my experience better. I've always said YES ! Why am I still having YouTube problems 3-4-5- times a year ? Just want to know. When some genius came up with "Plug and Play" I'd thought I'd seen it all. Seems the approach is limited and doesn't lend itself to new version upgrades to Firefox, YouTube, Adobe (Flash player, Shockwave or whatever they are calling it THIS WEEK....).

I have an old Dell - slow clock, limited RAM, small 28G drive and zero dollars for an upgrade. YouTube USED to work fine. It still CAN. I don't know (nor want to / feel I need to know) what versions of anything I have. I don't know what things are left over things a new versions of whatever is causing problems. Please help me. I also have an ID10T error to be patient with me.

Hi Snowflake70,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble with YouTube.

There have been some big updates to Adobe Flash (a plugin that YouTube uses) recently. If you haven't received these updates yet, this might be why you're having problems.

Here's how to check that your plug-ins are up-to-date:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and click on Add-ons
  2. The Add-ons manager will open in a new tab. Click Plugins on the right-hand side.
  3. Click the Check to see if your plugins are up-to-date link at the top of the screen
  4. This page will check your plugins and highlight any that need updating. Pay particular attention to Adobe Flash - if it's showing as out-of-date, use the button on the right-hand side to download and install the most up-to-date version.

I hope this helps! Please let us know whether this solves the problem.

Thanks,

Jayelbe

ARRRRRGH ! This is exactly what I'm talking about. I did as you (almost) instructed. The "Plug In's" tab is not on the right but on the left side of the screen. Clicked on it and sure enough it showed my Shockwave was "vulnerable" and should be updated. There was also a mention that addon's are blocked (?) I clicked on the on some highlighted text to find our why and got a message that 'add on's are blocked for security reasons. I clicked on the 'Update now' and it took me here :

????? Have you ever received a prescription with page after page after page AFTER PAGE of fine print in legaleze that makes zero sense to you but you keep it anyway in case there's an investigation about the cause of DEATH ? YouTube still not working. Thanks for helping. I think.

Snowflake70,

Yes, I appreciate it must be frustrating. That's exactly why we try not to make pages like that too prominent.

I'll bore you with a translation in a second. But in the meantime: did you try using the red Update Now button? It should have taken you through to a page where you can download the latest version of Flash. Downloading and installing ought to fix your issue. And we'd be happy to take you through how to do it in greater detail if you need this.

Boring part: A major security problem has been found with Adobe Flash, so Firefox will automatically block all the old versions of Flash that have this problem and prevent them from running. This is to help keep you protected. Ordinarily, the copy of Flash on your PC should keep itself updated, but it might only be set to automatically check for updates weekly or monthly. You could wait for Flash to update itself - but it's loads quicker to download the latest Flash directly from Adobe (which is what we're trying to help you do). I'm sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you. But the old version of Flash on your PC has been blocked because Mozilla are trying to protect you - and for no other reason. It's already possible for website creators to create videos and games that can play without any extra plugins at all. Mozilla are trying to make it easier for website creators to do this, so that one day (hopefully soon!) plugins like Flash, and all the hassle that comes with installing and updating them, will no longer be needed.

Thanks,

Jayelbe

PS - Whoops! I've just taken decisive action to make sure the right/left confusion can never happen again. ;) http://imgur.com/suJIrd5

Shockwave Flash 11.5 r502 Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues.

Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac Then reinstall the latest version.

Separate Issue; Update your Flash Player v16.0.0.235 http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Got a notice of an open ticket...sorry for the delay but I was so demoralized by the complicated directions I thought I'd give it a few days.

When I went to "remove and install" the flash player I followed Adobe's directions to find the "install_flashplayer[xxx].exe. I did a search on "instal_flaxhpalyer and found 4 of them .....no numbers for [xxx] just two with "11x32_mssd_aaa_aih.exe" and 2 "14x32_mssd_aaa-aih.exe".

Thinking I should use the latest one I did. I started up YouTube again and while it did play (auto assign of the lowest resolution - no problem because HD above 360 or 480 is too much for my CPU (been maxed out for over a year at 100%+ not reflected in the task manager) Now it plays in chunks - no indication of buffer loading and OH, by the way I found no option to specify "v16.0.0.235"

Standing by. I presume you are communicating with Jayelbe on this ticket (?) This might go a lot faster if it wasn't being done with ping-pong emails.

The links I posted above should do all that for you. The last link, Flash Player v16.0.0.235 will actually load the current version of flash for the system opening the web page. I added the version number in my posts so the other can compare their current version number.
