Why, suddenly, are my desktop icons hard to line up because they can be moved very small distances?

For years, my desktop icons have acted as if they only have so many "slots" to fit into on the desktop. BUt this was never a problem. They were easier to line up because they were either right next to each other, or one "slot" above/below/apart.

Now, for some reason, I can move the desktop icons tiny distances, as if they are scalar items that can be minimally nudged. Suddenly there are no more "slots", and kind of paradoxically the icons are harder to group and line up because I have to keep nudging them so they look straight. Before, they were either straight or a whole notch out of line.

Hi JeffLewis!

I don't think this is a Firefox issue, but I'll see if I can help.

Try right-clicking on an empty area of your desktop. A box should pop up with a set of options. Select "Sort by.." and choose a category to sort them by, and that should line them up nice and straight.
