Windows 8 deleted my user profile last night for reasons unknown. So today I am in the process of setting up a new profile, emails on thunderbird, basically everything (cheers windows 8).

Decided to stick my hotmail and gmail accounts onto thunderbird as well as my work. All work fine apart from gmail. Basically it will not recognise my username or password.

"Configuration could not be verified - Is the username or password wrong?"

Deff not. I have signed in and also changed the password specifically because of this error. Both are in working order. I have rechecked...........waited 30 mins and tried again....... closed and reloaded Thunderbird.........rebooted the computer.

Not sure what the issue is so any help would be appreciated.

Please provide: Help > Troubleshooting Information do not select 'include account name' click on 'copy yext to clipboard' paste info into this question edit/remove all info on fonts and printers.

In gmail webmail account: Confirm that you have accessed gmail webmail account and selected either pop or Imap forwarding and that the one you have selected is the type of mail account being created in Thunderbird.

Due to recent changes with gmail, also confirm you have select to use less secure apps. see info here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

As many people use their phones and computers to access the same mail account, gmail is encouraging the use of a 2 step verification method when phones are used. The trouble is that this means TB cannot use 2 step verification, so if you have set this up for your phone, then you need to create an application specifc password which you would use in Thunderbird. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833

If you are not using a phone nor set up the 2 step verification, then you do not need the application specific pasword, but you may need to specify that you choose a less secure app.

It was that damn 2-step verification. First had to turn it off then had to allow less secure. Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.
