After a forced update, firefox stopped giving the popup that lets you choose what to do with the file.

A temporary fix is to go into options and set "Always ask you where to save files", however this is clunky, and much much slower, so is there any way to get this popup back?

If not, then i will have to migrate to a different browser for safety, since this new "Feature" can be easily abused by hackers and malicious websites.

Hello. I noticed that Firefox (98.0.2) doesn't even ask if the file should be saved or opened with a program when downloading some file types. Unfortunately, these file types (e.g. GPX) are not listed under Settings --> General --> Files and Applications, so that I could assign them to a program or specify that they should always be asked. And I can't add these files somehow... I have also deleted the file "handler.json" in the profile folder, hoping to be asked then. But that doesn't happen. GPX files, for example, are assigned to the GSAK program in the system - but Firefox just wants to save them and doesn't offer the option to open them directly in GSAK. Does anyone know advice how I can get Firefox to give me the choice? Thanks a lot.

Recently (probably after an update) Firefox starts showing my list of downloads automatically and unwanted after each download. So I want to download a few MP3's from a website. I click on one, select the download option, and when it is done downloading a drop down display comes down from the Menu bar showing my last downloads. Obviously, as I download more, this list gets longer. I know I can make the list disappear by clicking anywhere on the screen, but it is an extra click to get rid of a feature I don't want. How do I turn that off?

Hi,

Up until very recently, I've been able to download files without issue. Every time it'd ask "do you want to open or save?". It's no longer doing that, and instead saves them by default. How do I revert this back to asking what I want to do?

Hi, for the long time when I have opened an PDF with external application, it was downloaded into system %TEMP%, then deleted after ext. app was closed. Very fine and expected.

Since ca. few weeks such PDFs are now downloaded to Desktop - and not removed afterwards! It's quite annoying to clear them again and again. I've checked, my %TEMP% and %TMP% are set correctly and writeable.

Hello,

Please can you tell me how I can click on a word document and for the document to automatically open without having to click the link in my downlaods? See screenshot of the download box that appears in the top right that I have to click to open the word document.

It does it for a PDF document but not for a word document.

I am having problems with doing downloads of any files from any website using Firefox. Every time, when I try to do a download, I get an error that the download failed. I am running Firefox 98.0.2 on a Windows 10 laptop. If I use Microsoft Edge, the download is successful. Any help would be appreciated.

It used to be that when I downloaded something, the icon would light up and I could click it to open if I wanted to, but now it pops open whenever I download something. This is very annoying as I often don't want to immediately open the folder that I downloaded to. How do I change this back to not opening automatically?

I just switched to Windows 11 and Firefox have a strange behaviour. Maybe also just firefox updates the behaviour like removing back action when clicking backspace some time ago. When a download of a PDF starts it is configured that it will ask me what to do. So in general I use open with Adobe PDF Viewer. This also works. But the file is anyway in my Download-Folder. I was used that it will be saved in the temp folder %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp and then also deleted after a while. If I want a file saved for a longer time I save it explicitly to a location I want to have it.

Any idea what is wrong in the Windows 11 or Firefox (currently 98.0.1)

Thanks a lot!

In the past, when ICS files were in a mail, I had been asked what to do, and could open them in OUTLOOK. This option has been apparently cancelled and it only asks where to save the file, without any option to open it directly. Furthermore, when I try to modify it in the "settings" and change it to "Always ask" I can't find no ICS files nor OUTLOOK SCHEDULE files. Please advice. Thanks

Hello Mozilla Support!

I just installed Firefox 98.0 this morning. I was very surprised to discover that I can no longer view an attachment in Firefox or open an attachment without also downloading it.

If you can, please ask the developers to reinstate the Download Attachment options to "Open with Firefox" and "Open with [select the program]" without automatically downloading every attachment.

Thank you!

I want to just open a PDF attachment and not have it download. FIrefox would contstantly reset a setting to where it saved it and I would change it back to open with Adobe. I do not see any other setting to check or change.

"And now, every time you start a download, Firefox will automatically bring up the Downloads panel by default. in all actuality, this is not a minimal interruption, this is a massive interruption. if i want to see my download ill open the download toolbar button! how do you stop this annoying popup? do i have to go back to an older version? is there an option to turn this off? there are tons of articles all the way back to 2011 on how to turn this off, but they dont apply to the newest version.

I save a lot of images from certain sites, and prior to me finally installing the latest update because your stupid system notifies me every few hours of an update and I dismiss 20 times a day for weeks on in.... I found that this latest update ruined firefox even further because now every single time I download an image, it pops the stupid download list on top of everything till I click somewhere instead of silently downloading like it used to do. I found no options at all for disabling this new terrible feature that you for some reason forced on us against our will yet again.

After today's update to version 98 Firefox keeps saving files to the Downloads folder when I don't want it to, I just want to open them, but not keep them, with this new behaviour the Downloads folder keeps filing up with useless clutter.

For example, before the update, when I downloaded a .zip file, a pop-up would show up asking if I wanted to save the file or open it with an application. If I chose to save it it would be saved to the Downloads folder, and if I chose to open it nothing would be saved to the Downloads folder.

After the update, when I download a .zip file, Firefox always saves the file to the Downloads folder, even if I choose to open it.

Can you please tell me if there is a way to make Firefox behave like in the previous version?
