Dear experts,
I'm trying to restore a .json bookmarks backup produced on a 60.0 firefox installation. When trying to restore it, I select the file, confirm the replace dialog and press OK. All the existing bookmarks are deleted but no bookmarks are imported. No error message is issued and no bookmarks are imported. No Firefox activity can be seen (no CPU consumption, no network or disk I/O, no increase in RAM used by Firefox). I have even waited 24h just in case, but still does nothing. I do *NOT* receive an "Unable to process backup file message.
I am able to convert the JSON to HTML using https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html, but it does not preserve neither the tags nor the folder structure and without the tags to locate the bookmarks they are all but useless.
I'm trying to restore in a laptop running Windows 10 and for the time being, I have no access to any other computer with a different Operating System.
I have tried different Firefox releases including the latest and the 60.3.0esr both 32 and 64 bits editions.
The disk of the PC where the Firefox which produced the backup is broken, so restoring the places.sqlite file or producing another backup or a bookmark export is not an option.
Do you know how can I get this backup restored?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Jon

When walking through the FF troubleshooting page on missing bookmarks I got to the Library and Restore / Backup Bookmarks and then got the error Unable to Process the Backup File.
Earlier I had tried the Profile change as suggested to "place.sqlite.old and that didn't work.
I did find these files (see screenshot) but I don't know how to use them. Thanks for any help. (I knew I shouldn't have updated!!)

I experienced a Windows 10 bootup issue and decided to restore my Windows 10 OS from a (10-days previous) OS configuration. This corrected my Win10 boot issue, but when I ran FireFox it requested that I logon to my FireFox sync account to update my bookmarks. After logging in, nearly 4 years (hundreds) of well-organized bookmarks were gone and just a couple of bookmarks appeared.
I have a FireFox account with both my PC and Phone listed. When viewing the "FireFox Account" page, there doesn't seem to be anyway to view the state or status any files being maintained by the FF account. I am wondering if the the FF sync process somehow moved the few bookmarks on my phone onto my PC. (Note: I noticed my PC appears to be listed twice on the device list.)
I do have full backups of my PC available from a few months ago. So I either need to: 1) figure out if my "full" bookmarks set is recoverable from my FireFox account... or 2) I need instructions on how to bring back most of my FF bookmarks from a full PC backup from a few months ago.
Thanks for your assistance!

I've backup up my bookmarks as JSON file using the bookmark backup function in Firefox. Now I'm trying to restore a bookmark by clicking the bookmark icon and selecting "Show All Bookmarks". Then the "Library" window pops up and you select "Import and Backup" > "Restore" > Choose File". But then nothing happens. A window should be popped up for you to select a file but nope, there's no response whatsoever. I've tried reinstalling the Firefox, deleting all files and folders in my Windows profile but no success.
Can anyone please help me? Thanks!

Yesterday 29-10-2018 after startup all FF bookmarks were gone, I checked the backup's folder, there was only one profile and the backup's folder did not contain backup's. So I started from scratch yesterday, but today those bookmarks were deleted again. The only bookmarks that show up are the standard ones. This time the restore function showed the backup from yesterday, but after importing that it appeared to be empty.
