Got the "new & improved" version 93, and it doesn't seem so improved. I can barely write this, as it keeps stopping and starting, and acts like we're underwater! It's using about 15GBs of RAM, and while I still have plenty on-hand, it's barely functioning! Come one, what's going on, will this browser ever just work?

Problem: Firefox glitches a lot if the total number of all tabs exceeds 4129, and the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the profile has a large size.

Details: Some interface elements stop displaying normally after some time after opening 4130 tab, 4131 tab or more - popup menus, extension menus, Firefox menus, contextual menus, hovering popup windows, etc. They're either not displayed at all or partially displayed. The problem is purely visual - these elements are present and can be clicked on with the mouse, they just aren't displayed correctly. The more tabs open after 4129, the faster and harder the Firefox lags. When I quickly open more than 50 tabs after 4129, the browser usually stops displaying anything and completely freezes. The problem also appears some time after restarting the browser. Closing all tabs above the limit of 4129 completely solves the problem.

What have I done to solve the problem and what isn't working:

  • tried running the browser in "safe-mode" (without extensions and hardware acceleration);
  • tried running my firefox-profile in a new clean firefox client of the same version (87);
  • tried running my firefox-profile in a new clean firefox client of the latest version (94);
  • tried running my firefox-profile on another computer with significantly more RAM (32GB);
  • tried running my firefox-profile with sessionstore.jsonlz4 saved earlier (a week earlier)
  • tried running my sessionstore.jsonlz4 in a brand new profile;
  • combinations of all steps above.

Partial solution: The problem is definitely related to the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file from the profile. But since this file is critically important to me, I can't just create a new blank one. I tried creating a brand new one based on the old one, but smaller in size (I used [this](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sidebery/) extension). The old sessionstore.jsonlz4 (A) is 10.2MB, the new one (B) is 631KB. This difference in size is due to the fact that the new file doesn't contain data in the "image" attribute of tabs. In old (A) sessionstore.jsonlz4 67% of the space was taken up by the "image" attribute (it seems to be responsible for displaying the icons on the tabs), 16% by attribute "csp" (no idea what it is), all other attributes take less than 2% each. There're no "csp" attribute in my new (B) sessionstore.jsonlz4 and "image" attributes are "null". The first and second place are the "url" (23%) and "title" (19%) attributes respectively. I moved the new (B) sessionstore.jsonlz4 to the old profile and the problem was solved (the 4129 tabs limit disappeared). However, since the new (B) sessionstore.jsonlz4 has no "image" attribute data, all tabs are displayed without icons. I wrote a simple python-script that decompresses sessionstore files into json format, then copy "images" attributes of the old (A) sessionstore.json into the new one (C), and then compresses this into the new (C) sessionstore.jsonlz4. The size of such a compiled file is 6.82MB. When using such a sessionstore (С), the tab-icons are displayed, but the problem with the limit of 4129 tabs appears again. So it's obvious that the large size of the sessionstore.jsonlz4 file is the root of the problem.

My questions: 1) How do I fix it? Obviously, the "do not use more than 4129 tabs" option is not suitable for me. I know that most users will find this number of tabs excessive and suggest using bookmarks, but it doesn't work for me either. Spread tabs across multiple profiles or even browsers? I'm afraid that's what I'll end up having to do. 2) Why is this happening? I read people online who had sessionstore.jsonlz4 over 50MB and had no problems. 3) 67% of the space in my sessionstore-(A) is taken up by images, and many of them are repeated 100-300 times - a colossal waste. In total, I counted 792 unique images. Question - is there any way to modify sessionstore.jsonlz4 to significantly reduce its size, but still leave the data about these images? I tried to create 792 files with these images on my disk and replace the "image" attributes data with the path to these files. I tried the following options:

 "image": "D:/some_dir/123.ico"
 "image": "D:\\some_dir\\123.ico"
 "image": "file:///D:/some_dir/123.ico"
 "image": "file:///D:\\some_dir\\123.ico"

But it all doesn't work - the browser just replaces all these values with "null" after loading. In the original, such an attribute usually looks something like this:

 "image": "data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGAAAf8...(many bytes)...5ErkJggg=="
 or
 "image": "data:image/ico;base64,...

Any other ideas on how to replace those long data:image-strings?

I'm sorry for such a vague, long question, but I really need help from the experts.

Firefox browser will not open. The FF icon is located in my taskbar (Windows 10). When I rest the mouse on this icon I see a very small representation of a website. When I click on the icon I see flash of some sorts on the desktop for about a nano second but the browser will not open.

I uninstalled FF and reinstalled. FF would open OK and I had no problems opening various websites. However, after I closed FF and attempted to open it up again it would not and so I am back to the original problem.

As I needed to access a website, I attempted to open Microsoft Edge and experienced the exact same problem. With the Microsoft Edge browser icon in the taskbar I can see a very small representation of a webpage but this browser will not open either.

Any assistance you can give me will be much appreciated, Con Van Dyk

Hi everyone. For the last 6 months, the <Firefox.exe> process is being terminated immediately after launching it.

I tried every solution I came across in the internet: from making a fresh clean installation to changing the profile, deleting the cache files and searching for Malwares and viruses. Unfortunately, nothing has worked.

Nevertheless, if I rename the "Firefox.exe" file to any other name, it will work without a problem. And if I kill the <explorer.exe> process, and then run "Frefox.exe" -without changing its name-, it will also function properly.

Before yesterday, I bought a new computer, installed Firefox, and it was working smoothly. However, today, I installed Office 2021 Pro Plus, logged into my Microsoft account from Word and <Firefox.exe> process is being terminated upon lunching it again.

I formatted the system, made a restore point, downloaded another version of office (2019 Pro Plus), logged into my Microsoft account, and the same has happened again. I tried different scenarios; the result is always the same.

  • Same problem is happening with Chrome. Only Edge is working if I logged into my Microsoft account from office apps.

Any idea?

No websites will load at all. The address looks fine but the loading ends up timing out just like when the address isn't correct or the site is having issues. I believe this started after the last update, I don't remember if it was a Firefox or windows update. I've tried the suggested troubleshooting tips, and uninstalled re-installed firefox twice. All I achieved was to lose my dark theme and previous open tabs.

Hi,

My partner has an issue with Google working within Firefox (FF). The problem started around 27 April 2022.

In short:

    • Both gMail and Google Drive keep saying “Ooops … the system encountered a problem (#2003) - Retrying in x s…” and “Not Connected”.
    • The above message may stop for a period and then gMail within FF fails to render its pages properly. Icons go missing. For example the check boxes to the left of the emails disappear while the remainder of the subject lines remains. Menu icons across the top of an open gMail document disappear (like Download, Report Spam and Delete icons ….). This seems to suggest a cache issue.
    • Search within FF using Google fails also. After entering search terms and pressing ENTER, nothing happens.

Note:

  • The stand-alone Google Chrome environment works fine. So gMail, Google Docs, Sheets etc work OK in the stand-alone Google Chrome app.
  • Duck Duck Go search works within the FF browser.
  • I have noted that if I simply log into MY Google Account under Firefox on her PC the same problem occurs.
  • If we log into my PC the problem is not apparent using either of our Google Accounts. So it appears to be an issue on her PC.

I have tried :

  • Flushing the cache in FF for all time, including data. Then rebooted.
  • We have followed your procedures under “Help” ie Runs a Firefox a tune up; used “Diagnose issues” and “cleared the startup cache”.
  • Have run Sophos AND MalwareBytes across the whole laptop. No PUPs or malware detected.

I uninstalled FF using Revo Uninstaller which initially uses the standard FF uninstall exe then it scans the drive for removes all FF files and entries within the Registry; then I re-installed the latest version of FF. Rebooted. No luck here either. I assume there is some remnant file that remains on the hard disk as some settings are retained after a new install.

Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad , model 20QFS00B00. OS: Windows 10 Pro, vers 10.0.19044 Build 19044, 64 bit Firefox browser: is up-to-date; vers 99.0.1 (64 bit)

I can't find any recent issues related to this specific problem. Please advise what to try next.

Of course I'm happy to provide additional info if required or work through different scenarios to isolate the issue(s).

Thanks in advance for any assistance, Steve Gee

The included pic shows the red screen that comes up when I hold shift down when the mail composer is up, this is one of several like errors like a hover over text one and auto save one which crash the page nearly and require reloading of the page, another error is that the close, minimize and maximize buttons are missing when protonmail site tab is both active and maximized, not when minimized, then it is the same as the rest, support and I were not able to resolve this, I picked up some Java replacement extensions and whatnot and that did not work either.

Hi. On dictionary.com when I type in a word in the search bar and press enter, it works fine, but when I am on a definition page on dictionary.com (not the homepage) and I type a word in the search bar and press enter, it does not work. The page does not respond.

Also when I am on biblehub.com and I type in a reference (like Genesis 1:1) in the search bar at the top and press enter, I get directed to a blank page: https://biblemenus.com/topmain/send.php?q=undefined

In the search bar at the top of biblehub.com I must click the magnifying glass icon in order for it to work, which is annoying.

Note that a while ago (I don´t know how long ago) these things used to work correctly. I don´t know whether a Firefox update caused the problem or whether it was a change to the coding on the webpages. I am on the latest version of Firefox. Neither of these problems happen on Chrome.

Let me know what can be done to fix it. Thank you.

Ever since the Firefox upgrade to v100.0 (Win10 64-bit), Firefox locks up whenever it spawns a new, external process. This happens most frequently whenever the website to which I'm connected (doesn't matter which one) attempts to print or read in a file on the hard drive. This is especially true for email sites, where these functions are most often called from within FireFox. No error code appears and it's not immediately evident that Firefox even has an issue. It just becomes completely unresponsive. I have to call up the Task Manager and kill the Firefox tasks to exit. When I reinvoke Firefox, it restarts the tabs I had open at the time I killed it. This never happened before v100.0, and does not happen in any other browser. I have a friend with a Windows 10 machine who has exactly the same problem.

Any suggestions?

Hello all,

I am having problems with video playback on some websites (see screenshot attached). The problem is that the video options start to "multiply" - for example, when I start the video there is (as is normal) one 'Speed' and one 'Quality' button, but then every second these buttons start to multiply. This happens only on some websites - for example, it does not happen with normal videos on YouTube, although it happens on YouTube Shorts sometimes.

This is my first question on the Mozilla Support page, I thank you in advance for your help and I hope I follow the community guidelines. Please feel free to leave any suggestions or feedback concerning how I should proceed for asking for help in the future.
