please note it seems possible that this category is specifically for download of firefox, this is not so. opting for this category given the possibility that that theory is mistaken, and due to not seeing any other category that might be more suitable

using firefox developer edition (also couldn't find an individual category for this), and when downloading any files, it saves automatically without asking where/what to name it etc., as preferred. but specifically for pdf files, it always opens them in a new tab upon completing the download; this can be very frustrating when downloading larger quantities, especially with it switching to that file tab and away from the source of downloading. firefox is not even the default for opening pdf in the first place

looked through preferences for anything (and tested anything that looks potentially relevant, to no avail), looked for a solution online from various sources and search methods, no dice

how can this be disabled?

i got a new browser, was trying to get it to recognize mailto commands. instead it opens a window to go to a profile (tried it in edge does the same thing).

originally it was finding an old profile i made ages ago, but it insists on making a brand new profile.

the thing is, i don't have a profile, all my files are listed in a custom directory i put into the thunderbird directory (to make it portable). and if i try to make a profile it blanks it all out - settings, structure etc. even if i copied the old files into a new directory and focused the new profile with the old files in it.

and now i'm starting to confuse myself.

basically i think what i need is - the ability to create a profile of my current settings, so i can give that to the browsers. i don't remember having this issue with waterfox. but i'm using something else now. is there a way to do this? take what i have, that isn't in an official profile, and just put it into a profile?

thanks.

I am resigning with Firefox after an hiatus. I am trying to not use Windows (10) my LT.

Firefox seems to be in tandem with Windows. If any I would rather tandem with Google. But trying to get away from both (CONTROLLING MY DEVICES).

How can I set up Firefox to not use my Windows apps?

TY Stew.

I have a HP laptop 15-BA009DX with a Firefox problem. I noticed that the newest Firefox release takes one of my backed up bookmarks that I restore - causing the folders to "leak" the bookmarks out of the folders. The result is a list at the bottom of the bookmarks menu containing several hundred bookmarks. It seems to only happen when you restore a bookmark .json file. I Loaded the Extended Support Release (ESR) version on my laptop and discoveredf that it doesn't have this bookmark "leak" problem.

I tried to install the ESR version on my other (standby) laptop in place of the "regular" version to fix this bookmark folder "leaking" but the ESR version appears to not completely install. I can't go to any web page and I can't access the Tools > Options page. When I select the "Options" choice, it doesn't do anything. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall both the ESR version and the "regular" version several times with the same result. I frequently get an install error message similar to "VCRuntime140_1.dll not found - Reinstall can fix this".

I am familiar with computers but I'm not a techie. Installing this should be a no-brainer, but I am baffled why it won't correctly install and work.

Any Idea what is causing this problem? Thanks for your kind reply.

I have a large number of carefully organized Firefox bookmarks, which I backed up each time I logged off for the day, saving the most recent five. I imported these from my standalone backup hard drive to my new computer. Firefox couldn't restore them. Then I saw that for all five files, the listed file type was "Microsoft Edge HTML Document," so no wonder.

I have no idea how or why this happened or what to do about it. In theory, import into Edge and then export into Firefox? Given this incident and some bad past experiences, that prospect scares me to death. Any other suggestions, please? I would be so grateful for a way out of this.

Every week or so firefox becomes incapable of downloading any files regardless of site, size, or filetype. Running in troubleshoot mode and deleting all plugins does not solve issue, only solution is to refresh/reset firefox, which solves the issue until it starts up again, I haven't found any catalyst except for downloading, but that might just be when I notice it.

Firefox suddenly saving Audible files as mpeg4 video files instead of aax

For some reason when downloading audiobooks from Audible, the download window in Firefox is categorizing the files as mpeg4 (video) files using the .mp4 file extension. However, unlike audio .mp4 files, Firefox is encoding them as VIDEO .mp4 files. The files do not open in iTunes nor media player as (obviously) they aren't actually video files.

The files download properly as .aax files in Safari and Chrome so this is a Firefox issue and a recent one at that; thus, it could be related to the recent Version 93 update. There are a few others who have mentioned this issue in the community forum, but as far as I can tell no one at Mozilla has actually addressed the issue or offered help.

Yes, you can change the file extension to .aax once downloaded and it opens fine. The point is that there is no discernible reason the files should be categorized as video files in the first place, and since this function has been working for years until recently this seems like a bug the Mozilla team should fix.
