I had Avast Antivirus Safe Browsing, Ad Block Plus, Ad Block Plus Pop Up Addon, Facebook Ad Blocker and Webmail Ad Blocker all installed and working great on a customers laptop, but after they upgraded to Windows 10 all the add ons have disappeared. I tried reinstalling them and the blue bar goes across to the end and it sticks on 'downloading'. Why can't I get these to install?

I take care of 5 systems for this household. Two Windoze 10, one Vista, and two Ubuntu 14.04.

We currently use SeaMonkey, but Sync (ESSENTIAL to us) hasn't worked for literally years, and other things are dragging, including requests for help and info.

My real questions are: 1) Is sync currently working well? 2) Is there anything in the crystal ball that might hamper or destroy sync in ANY foreseeable future? 3) Four of the five systems are 64 bit, one is 32 bit. The Ubuntu systems are one each 32 and 64 bit.

  • A) I presume 64 and 32 bit installations get along together, and have transparent user interfaces as to bitness. Is this true?
  • B) Are there both 64 bit and 32 bit Ubuntu installations?
  • C) Besides bitness, what are the differences between the 32 and 64 bit versions?

4) I guess all the synced items will transfer to FireFox from SeaMonkey?

5) What other problems might I encounter with FireFox that I don't see in SeaMonkey?

6) Is FireFox planned to be supported indefinitely?

Thanks!

I am running the latest version of Firefox (40.0.3) with ad blocker plus as my only addon. However every time I attempt to open a new tab it take ages to open because Firefox is constantly searching for an update. This takes 2-3 minutes every time. Have tried refreshing Firefox, uninstalling and reinstalling without success. My system is Win 8.1 on a i7 Lenovo PC. All worked well until the latest FF upgrade. I have no problems with the same version installed on my laptop. Any help/suggestions would be much apprciated. Thanks.

How to see synced content in another browser?

Hi all,

I will unfortunately soon lose the ability to use Firefox at work because my company's IT department don't want to support it anymore as we upgrade to Windows 10.

So, I will have to use either IE, Edge or Chrome. Ideally I would like an extension which I can use to connect one of these browsers (probably Chrome) to Firefox, but since that doesn't exist the next best thing is to be able to manually "sync" things.

First, how do I view the synced content for my Firefox Account in a web page? Is there a way to access it from https://accounts.firefox.com/settings

Second, how to I add things to this?

Mainly I am interested in syncing tabs. Browser history would also be useful but I can see how this could be very difficult. Bookmarks would be an alternative method of syncing history.

Thanks :)

Long time user (15-20 yrs?), I have been avoiding the "next" upgrade for several years for various reasons (hate change, fave add-ons go away, hate change, not broke-don't fix, hate change...). But I am now running into a few websites that won't permit this browser, so it may be time to move on. With heavy adblocking and tracker-blocking and my benign web browsing habits, I've not been concerned about security (never had a virus in 20 years - knock wood). It's just full functionality and slowness at this point. At this point, I see even my Classic Theme Restorer is no longer available, so I'll just have to bite the bullet on aesthetics and deal with a modern browser. However, a couple of things are unclear:

1. does 20 years of bookmark history (and remembered history) affect memory footprint. I only refer to existing bookmarks occasionally these days and may consider a full purge. Partial purge would probably be too time-consuming. Maybe even a full profile purge might be worthwhile for a true clean slate. Maybe FF has come a long way and old extensions and settings won't be necessary. I also have several about: settings that I may (or may not?) miss.

2. Are automatic updates unavoidable in newer versions? I read about "manual" but it sounded temporary.

3. The permissions on many potential add-ons I've looked at are quite unnerving... e.g many of them require full access to ALL my data (usernames and passwords!!!) and I know the function has no need for such. Who has time to investigate these fully for safety? Is there any anti-malware vetting required for add-ons to be available?

4. I know newer is generally faster, but FF has a history of growing and slowing down after upgrades. My hardware isn't getting any newer (although its more than ample for my current needs), but software tends to be developed on latest and greatest hardware. How does latest FF compare to circa V41 in memory usage?

In any case, I thought I would give the latest vesion a whirl on my old Vista laptop (which is currently at V43) and check it out before plunging in on my W7 work PC or home PC. Any answers or insight into such a big jump are much appreciated.

I keep an archive of profile backups on an external hard drive. The backups are compressed, and I usually include the version of Firefox last used by the (principle) profile in the compressed archive filename (e.g., userinfo-firefox-56.0_date). I also make a semi-regular sync backup of the currently used profile. So far, so good.

My currently synced backup, which has not been compressed and archived, is about a month old. (I did say semi-regular.) I would like to compress and archive it before syncing, but I am no longer sure of the exact version of Firefox it used. I usually run updates when released, and can suppose Firefox 65.x, but what if I would like to be more exact? After running a search of files containing "version" in the main profile, I came across a file named compatibility.ini, which resides in the root directory. The contents are as follows:

[Compatibility] LastVersion=65.0.1_20190211233335/20190211233335 LastOSABI=WINNT_x86_64-msvc LastPlatformDir=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox LastAppDir=C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\browser

Is this a reliable way to detect the last version of Firefox used by the profile?

Hello, I have been having issues with playing youtube videos, and so I tried to see if I could remedy the problem. Well, not only was I unsuccessful, I somehow managed to disable the full screen feature in the process. Without knowing what I did to cause that to happen I had no idea how to undo it, so I tried refreshing firefox thinking that might help. Now I am presented with a box that tells me to choose 1 of 2 default profiles, or I have the options to delete, rename, or create a profile. As noted, I know very little about computers and have no idea which choice to make, or for that matter why to make it. Clearly this is a pretty simple issue, but I am just worried about making things worse at this point. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I run debian 9.8, and rather than using the distro version of firefox, I run the mozilla version. This works just fine, but when firefox detects that it needs updating, the only way I know to do it is to log into Xwindows using the root account and do it from there. I don't want a *user* account to own the browser, but I can't seem to find a way to update without Xwindows. There are some old links about using .MAR files, but the most recent one is a couple of years old, and due to appearances, i suspect - although i didn't confirm it by following the links - that only older versions, not the current one, can be loaded that way. Enough people have looked at this that it would appear worth putting in a flat warning that this cannot be done, so that people don't waste their time looking for something that doesn't exist. Help!

I was notified that Firefox update 59.0.3. was released today, and Help:About suggests I do the update. "What's new" release notes indicate that v.59.0.3 fixes a bug in compatibility with Win10, and apparently does nothing else. Hi All,

I would like to associate jpeg files with the Firefox Browser but I'm not given this option. I'm only given the options of IE and the other usual ones like Windows Photos. I had this problem on another computer several months ago and by "clicking around" was able to finally do what I wanted but I don't remember how I did it. I can use IE if I need to but I want to use Firefox! I'd asked this same question before and went back to the answer given but It wasn't clear to me.

Thanks so much for your help.
