First, I'm working with a Macbook, Tiger 10.4.11 and Firefox 3.6.27 and cannot update anything.

I used to get to web mail with mail.mydomain.com (hosted at network solutions) and that became http://mail.mydomain.com/interfaces/sso/login.php and gave me a login page. This still works on Macbook Safari and on an XP box ( Firefox AND Explorer). But on Mac Firefox, it works for one domain hosted at network solutions but not the other domain hosted by the same company, using the same interface. I got the strangest message about javascript not working, and I was referred to a page at alanwood.net which is truly strange. Javascript *is* enabled and it is functioning. But it looks like even javascript cannot be updated.

Well, after disabling add-ons and extensions and clearing out history, I figured out that if I just got more specific with my bookmarked hotlink, it worked in Mac Firefox. I got to the login page. But then my password disappeared when I clicked LOGIN. After more messing around and a re-start, my password sticks but clicking LOGIN does absolutely nothing. Well "waiting for..." flashes by in the status bar, but nothing *really* happens.

So I'm inclined to think that the javascript trail is the trail to follow but I haven't a clue what to do next (altho nothing really explains why one domain works and another doesn't). I've tried starting in safe mode. I've tried every troubleshooting step I could find. (If I can, I'm going to get linux on this box but even that is proving more difficult than I'd hoped, but that's a different problem. )

Does this make any sense to anybody here? I'll be beyond grateful if I can get any help.

Thanks.

EDIT: I should add that this all started a week or so ago. Before that, there was no trouble logging into any webmail using any web browser including Firefox on either Mac or XP. Now, I can't on this one account but the problem only appears in Mac Firefox.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

Reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + Fbug 5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Thanks for trying but I had found all of those troubleshooting tips and tried them. In fact, I just ran thru them again just in case.

(I do admit that I have one other site I'd forgotten about where I just get a page of scripting when I click. On the other hand if I come at the page from another hotlink, all is well. So far, these are the only two instances where javascript seems to go crazy or do nothing. But only in Firefox on an obsolete MacBook.)

It looks like this just might be something that will never get solved because this MacBook and its software, including Firefox, are totally deprecated. Can't do anything with them.

I'd better focus my energies on migrating to linux.

But I *do* thank you and will return if anyone else has an idea.
