Firefox keeps crashing

more options

For quite a while now my Firefox has been crashing. I always assumed it was because I had too many tabs open so I didn't really try to remedy the situation. Recently, I finally decided to upgrade to Firefox 24 and the issue has gotten much worse - with Firefox crashing even when I have only a limited number of tabs open and it crashing much more often. Furthermore, after updating to Firefox 24, I've had issues with Adobe Flash crashing randomly as well (note: I did not have this problem with the older version of Firefox). My Adobe Flash was up to date and after a bit of research I read that maybe the up to date version of Flash (version 11.9) had a problem running properly with Firefox 24 so I downgraded to the Flash version 11.8 but alas the problem of Flash crashing it still occurring. But even when I don't have any Flash players open, Firefox will still crash or lag. I feel like the issues are all connected somehow.

I've visited various Firefox troubleshooting pages but as I don't know what the exact problem is, I'm not sure which help methods I should target. I don't use that many add-ons/plugins so I don't think they would be causing a problem. Also, I have unchecked the 'use hardware when available' to see if that made any difference, but it doesn't seem to.

On the about:crashes page, the overwhelming majority of the reports do not start with 'bp' at the front of them and there is mention of throttling when I click on them (maybe that's because I crash so often? I don't know). I am unsure about how to decipher the crash reports and would appreciate any help to my problem.

Throttling has to do with reducing the overall number of crash reports submitted to keep from overwhelming Mozilla's resources, not anything that would cause Firefox to crash.

This Bug was mentioned as being related on a few of your crash reports, but there isn't anything concrete mentioned as the cause, more of a generic out of memory bug which has been and continues to be investigated.

So from the sounds of it there is no remedy for my issue as of yet?

Do you think it would help if I downgraded to Firefox 22? For example would that fix the problem of Adobe Flash crashing on me? (which only started happening with Firefox 24) And if I downgrade I'm assuming I would lose all my current tabs?

more options

I doubt if downgrading would help you. The "trend" on that type of crash indicates the frequency has been decreasing in recent versions of Firefox, or stated in a different way, it is dropping down in the Top Crash list.

Mention was made of this being an Out Of Memory (OOM) crash, so my advice is to run MemTest to see if you might have a weak RAM card or chip.

http://www.memtest.org/

Don't just do a fast check, run it to the max number of cycles or passes. Firefox is hard on RAM and will find problems that other software won't find.

upgrade your firefox and try again. if dosent work try firefox nightly. and reaply us.

Your crash reports show a number of version 1.0 extensions, and when I web search the ID numbers, I get no results. Can you try disabling all of your nonessential extensions? By nonessential I mean you could go a day without them.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category

Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with the Flash Player plugin. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) If you have any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash

(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"

(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista and higher) Not applicable to Windows XP

See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

Any luck?

So I've disabled non-essential extensions like you said and we'll see how that works. You mentioned a number of version 1.0 extensions, jscher2000, and when I looked at my Add-Ons Manager, there were three extensions named XUL Cache 1.0 that were enabled. Those might have been what you were seeing and result in no ID numbers? I'm not sure. I've noticed those extensions in the past but paid them no mind as they seemed harmless. Anyway, I've disabled them now and see if it makes any difference.

I've also disabled the hardware graphics acceleration in both Firefox and Flash so hopefully videos will stop crashing on me. Maybe disabling the acceleration in Flash (in addition to disabling in Firefox) will stop the crashing because when I disabled the acceleration in Firefox alone, it didn't seem to do the trick. Disabling protective mode doesn't apply to me.

Is it possible that this could be a memory leak issue that the upgraded Firefox has caused? I know my RAM is probably on the weaker side mainly because my computer is older. But the thing that I just can't get past is the fact that these constant crashes and related issues really only starting taking place once I upgraded Firefox. If my weak RAM card was the problem then why didn't this occur before? As I mentioned above, Firefox did crash on me before multiple times a day when I was using an older version but I believe these crashes were largely due to the fact that I have so many tabs open and I could understand why Firefox would crash on me. Now, with Firefox 24, these crashes are occurring with not that many tabs open and it seems to be random as well. Maybe Firefox 24 is somehow using more RAM, causing it to subsequently crash. I looked into the troubleshooting page for this exact issue and it recommended disabling extensions and plugins as well as checking the hardware acceleration box because "Firefox hardware acceleration eases memory usage in case of a dedicated graphic card memory." I, of course, can't have that box checked because of my issues with the Flash Player crashing on me.

I really appreciate all the help you lot have so far given me though and do hope I will find out what is causing this to happen.

Update for anyone still reading: Firefox and Adobe Flash still crashing. Nothing I have done has changed anything. :/

more options

Hi oleander, could you post some updated crash IDs to see whether the signature has changed?

more options

Sure thing. These three are the most recent: bp-e4d0cd40-0e75-4714-9cd6-99b742131030 bp-d98564cc-f7e0-4846-aea2-441552131029 bp-71431df0-333a-400b-bd0e-5c5f22131029

more options

Hi oleander, thank you for the IDs.

The first is a plugin crash for Flash. It shows that the Flash Player plugin spawned over 20 different threads. Usually this indicates protected mode is active, but to my knowledge, protected mode is not used in Windows XP. I'm not sure what is going on here. I suppose there's no harm in trying to disable protected mode in case it somehow is running. The steps are in this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

The other two are out-of-memory errors showing 92-99% system memory usage. If you don't have a huge number of tabs open, is there any other reason that Firefox might not be able to use more memory, whether due to other software or a full disk that constrains use of virtual memory?

more options

The out of memory issue seems to be the problem here again and again. So could it be that Firefox 24 is causing an increased level of memory leak than before? I don't have a full disk and really don't use that many software programs on my computer.

more options

Well the crashes have suddenly gotten worse today. For example, it just crashed again with only 2 tabs open. I'm at a loss.

more options

Hi oleander, the first of those reports is not an out-of-memory error; it has been reported many times but no solution is provided in the bug report linked to that crash signature.

The other four seem to be the same out-of-memory problem. (See attached screen captures regarding memory use.) I don't know why Firefox is having this problem on your system. Do you have any kind of memory manager or sandbox that might restrict Firefox's access to memory? Does this problem start immediately after you start up Windows, or only after you've run several programs over a length of time?

more options

By the way, what do your Greasemonkey userscripts do? Can you disable some or all of those as well?

more options

The memory problem only arises when Firefox is open. I don't run any other programs during most days so I don't think they are the ones that are causing the drain on memory. It is solely Firefox that drains memory and subsequently causes it to crash. There must have been some kind of change in the Firefox 24 configuration because this memory drain was not a problem with the older versions - at least not for me.

Practically all of my Greasemonkey userscripts are disabled so I don't think they are contributing to the crashes.

The other day I started using the Memory Fox add-on to see if that would help curtail the increased memory usage but it hasn't seemed to make much of a difference unfortunately.

And now it is January 2014 and the problem persists with Firefox 26.0.

It is very sad because I prefer Firefox but I need flash to be working. I find the steps advised to be woefully inadequate and I am reverting to IE and Chrome until I can verify that the situation is corrected.

The other browsers do not have this issue so I don't understand why Firefox (Mozilla) can't fix it once and for all. It didn't use to be an issue but now it is a major issue.

Bye for now Firefox!

Hi bwls, this seems to be your first post about your crashes and it doesn't have any information in it to show whether it is the same problem as the earlier posters were experiencing.

If you are serious about using Firefox again, start a new question with your system details and some recent crash IDs. See:

more options

I would love to give you details. I get a popup stating that Shockwave flash is not responding and asking me if I want to continue or disable the plugin.

That is all I know.

Hi bwls, it sounds as though Firefox isn't crashing completely, but Flash isn't working. That does sound like a very different situation from the original poster. To avoid this thread going off track, it really would be better for you to start a new one as described in my earlier reply. Please include your add-on information, and how repeatable this is (e.g., every video site or just particular sites, every video or just particular videos, etc.).
