Windows 7. I am the sole user and the administrator. Each time I start Firefox I get the "The update could not be installed. Please make sure you do not have any other instances of firefox... etc." Task Manager reports all firefox instances are closed, both apps and processes. Happens even after rebooting Windows 7 Help About Firefox reports I am on 20.0.1 "You are currently on the RELEASE channel.

There is a "Restart to Update" box. When clicked, Firefox restarts and the "The update could not be installed..." notification is there again.

I have seen this reported forever, it seems, and lots of "fixes" are suggested, yet none work. Does ANYONE have any idea why this happens, or better yet, how to fix it?

Thanks for all the responses. I followed them all, and was finally able go get rid of the 4500 duplicate bookmarks, plus removed XMARKS, by process of elimination XMARKS causing Firefox to freeze 4500 duplicate bookmarks causing all kinds of problems Deleting updates folders and profiles fixed the updates problems. All these problems hitting me at once. Who knew? Thanks again...

Hello,

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

Before I do this, will I lose bookmarks, saved passwords, etc? Right now I am almost ready to do anything. Thanks for your reply -- Doc

Profile Backup and Restore

Mozilla Firefox stores all your personal settings, such as bookmarks, passwords and extensions, in a profile folder on your computer, in a location separate from the Firefox program.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop. Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.

It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
