recover programs after installation of automatic updates
With no warning whatsoever, my computer shuts down as automatic updates are installed. I lose all the open windows that I am working with; when the computer starts up, my session is not restored. Works files, open photo galleries, etc, fail to open as well, so I lose my complete work session. If I try "system restore" that does not restore my previous session. This has happened on every computer (PC or laptop) that I have owned. How can Windows or the computer manufacturers get away with doing this sort of thing? There is no analogy I can think of to describe the hideous inconvenience and inconsideration behind this stupid practice. Our legislators should be made aware of this kind of infringement on our privacy. It is like being broken into, having everything in your home upset, even stolen, and then having to put it all back together again. It's like the gestapo of cyberspace.

I agree. This is, by far, my least favorite "feature" of Windows.
It looks like you will have to (like you said) put things back together manually. You should be able to go to the History menu (Firefox button > History) and look though the "recently closed tabs" and "recently closed windows" submenus and restore much of what you had open. Also from the History menu you can select "show all history" and can search though all the sites you've been to.

in my experience windows update will open a popup 10 minutes before an automatic restart is scheduled which allows you to postpone that action. in any case you can also change your update settings: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-how-Windows-installs-or-notifies-you-about-updates
Sorry, that really isn't a Firefox support issue, maybe a Microsoft support forum would have an answer for you.
IMHO, turn off those automatic updates, and remember to do a manual update check for Windows Updates every second Tuesday of the month at a time which is more convenient for you, and when you are prepared to have your PC re-boot for the installation of those updates.

Thank you all for your good responses. Indeed this is more of a Microsoft/Windows issue, however, in this case my ability to use Firefox has been effected. I am working through it, though, and will solve the problem, eventually. Meanwhile, no doubt we are all familiar with the inherent frustrations that arise when our work is interrupted without warning, and, when we are pressed for time, this can make for a daunting situation. I feel this sort of thing is unnecessary and that Microsoft, etc., has a moral obligation to their customers to provide sufficient warning before intruding as they do, with automatic updates. This is an issue of ethics.
