Here is a link to the online manual for HP J4500 --> http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01770356.pdf

Replacing the ink cartridges begins on page 106. There is a CAUTION following step 1 that all doors must be closed when you turn on the printer, otherwise the printer will not release the cartridges.

  • Step 1. Make sure the device is on.
    • CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the front access door to access the ink cartridges, the device will not release the cartridges for changing. You might damage the device if the ink cartridges are not docked safely when you try to remove them.

My advice is to do the following:

  1. close all doors.
  2. turn off the printer and wait 30 seconds
  3. turn on the printer (all doors closed) and wait for the printer to settle down. You will hear the print head/cartridges move around a bit. Do not open doors until the printer has been quiet for a few seconds.
  4. follow the instructions in the manual on page 106.

I don't have a hp, sorry, in the second link you can choose the manual of your hp printer and see how you can do that.

thanks again

There should be graphical cartridge changing instructions in the inside of the cartridge door, or on the main housing behind that door. Usually with HP cartridges the top edge - front of the cartridge needs slight downward pressure with your thumb to remove the cartridge.

Glad that I could help.

A friend had the same problem that you did with her DJ5600 series, but she is a stubborn one, tried to force the cartridge out and had to spend about $100 to have her printer repaired.
