I liked the new feature in 13.0.1 that did not load all tabs by default - made startup much faster, but it stopped working after the first time, and I cannot figure out how to re-enable it from settings. ps. it may have to do with my having to close via Task Manager.

See Tools > Options > General > Startup: Don’t load tabs until selected

The thumbnails on the about:newtab page are generated from the cache, so if the page is not in the cache or otherwise can't be rendered as a PNG image then you will get an empty box.
Do not use Clear Recent History to clear data when you close Firefox.
If there is no history then you get an about:newtab page with empty boxes.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag them to a different position to pin them to that position or you can remove them by clicking the close X of an item to block them.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a slot on the about:newtab page to pin them.

Hello, thanks. on my Firefox (13.0.1) @ Tools > Options > General > Startup: "Don’t load tabs until selected " is selected, but greyed out - there's "When Firefox Starts:" which is set to Tab Mix Plus Session Manager, which may be the problem.

The rest of your post is nothing to do with my issue as I'm not referring to NewTab pages, which are set to your home page anyway - not blank, so it can't be loaded with tab thumbnails. Thanks again, and hope this extra info is useful towards a solution.
