When using a website that I previously had no problem with, as soon as I click to enter the secure section I receive this message: An error occurred during a connection to ols2.rta.nsw.gov.au.

SSL peer rejected a handshake message for unacceptable content.

(Error code: ssl_error_illegal_parameter_alert)

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site.

I have contacted the organisation (for the website) and they have not had anyone else contact them about this problem, and therefore I assume it is a problem with my firefox or security. They reset my account, but this did not help at all.

Could it be because I have changed ISPs since last using that website? If so, how do I fix the problem?

Thanks in advance,

I had a fiddle around after you suggested that something may be interfering, such as add-ons. No luck there, but I just tried disabling NetNanny temporarily and now the website works!

I presume NN is blocking the site somehow. Not sure if I can fix it, but at least I can use the website occasionally (which is how often I need it) by disabling NN for a few minutes.

A big thank you, Cor-el - I would not have worked this out without your patience.

Try to update to the latest Firefox version.

You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:

Thanks for your suggestion. I have updated to 9.0 but it hasn't changed the problem with that website.

It is interesting that the last version showed that "firefox is up to date" even though it was version 8.

Is there anything else I can try? What does this error message actually mean?

I'm not seeing that error on Linux with Firefox 9.0.1.
I do see that it is an old software on the server that only works with an 128 bit RC4 connection (security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_sha).

Google Chrome reports this:

Your connection to ols2.rta.nsw.gov.au is encrypted with 128-bit encryption.

The connection uses SSL 3.0.

The connection is encrypted using RC4_128, with SHA1 for message authentication and RSA as the key exchange mechanism.

The connection is not compressed.

The connection had to be retried using SSL 3.0. This typically means that the server is using very old software and may have other security issues.

The server does not support the TLS renegotiation extension.

Does that mean it is a problem caused by the website rather than firefox?

I've just tried the site with IE and it does not work there either.

The URL that you posted works for me. So if it isn't working for you then it is either a problem with files in your current profile (e.g. secmode.db or cert8.db or prefs in prefs.js with a wrong value) or you have security software (firewall) that is causing problems with a secure connection.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
