Why is my Firefox or Thunderbird unable to access the Internet after updating my IE 8?

My Firefox,Thunderbird, Google Chrome were all working well alongside IE 6. Then I updated to IE 8. Windows Update then sent many updates which I installed. But it seems all my Browsers and Thunderbird lost access to the Internet soon, maybe after I installed Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, which was sent as a High Priority Essential Update. I checked Windows Firewall Exceptions and repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled the Browsers as well as Thunderbird, but none could access the Internet, except IE 8. Only that is working without any problem. Please advise a solution.
