Dowloaded files (especially zipped files) won't open - says corrupted

I am using Firefox 6.0.1. For the last few updates I cannot open downloaded files, whether they be zipped, PDFs, or embroidery design files. If I do a Save As, the file downloads and opens correctly, but not all websites allows this. I end up using IE, and I hate IE
