hangs due to bookmarks database
There is a problem causing hangs that is now fixed on Firefox 8 but not in Firefox 7 or earlier. It relates to the maintenance and use of places.sqlite the file that holds History and Bookmarks. There is an add-on that can be used to fix this problem

try the add-on see http://blog.bonardo.net/2011/09/30/is-your-firefor-freezing-at-regular-intervals

what version of firefox are you currently using?
the system info from when you started the thread shows fx6, you should be on fx7 by now, in fact I would suggest you in fact change over to the beta channel so as to get firefox 8, that seems stable and has solved some of the fx7 problems

I will try to sumarise my understanding of a few of the facts, correct me if I am wrong.

problem is hangs or freezes of firefox (as opposed to crashes with crash info showing)

you have

scanned for malware

tried in safe mode, including also then disabling all plugins

tried reducing the max connections preference

you checked your firewall is not blocking anything

Some more questions

what security software and firewalls (including add blockers and any sytem software) are you currently using. (sometimes different products may interact badly)

how often and when does it hang, are you noticing any patern

if it hangs downloading and then loading almost any web page I suggest you try

save a web page to the local system drive, then try opening that saved copy,

does that work ok

try looking at your error console is that mainly clear of errors ?

use Firefox Button -> Web Developer -> Error Console

clear all the errors

try loading pages from this forum, does it remain clear of errors
(It is probably fairly normal to see a variety of errors an a lot of sites, using this forum should be error free)

there is also the possibility of trying to log gc & cc collections in the error console, which could be informative, at least to the developers

Try using IE or some other browser, does that work ok ?

have you tried firefox in a new clean profile yet ?
Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems_-make-a-new-profile

There probably are a few unknown causes of hangs at present judging by the number of posts, it may be worth filing a formal bug about your problem if it occurs in safe mode with a recent supported release of firefox, if you are interested in making that effort please let me know.

-> Do a MALWARE check with these Malware Scanning programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
