I upgraded to 4, my bookmarks were gone, went back to 3.6.16 and they didn't come back-went thru instructions for lost bookmarks-does not apply-what do I do now?

After I upgraded my bookmarks were gone so I followed the link to go back to the previous version in the forum and my bookmarks did not return. I have looked through the "lost bookmark" directions but I don't have the add-on listed to update and it doesn't tell you what to do if you don't have that add-on.
