in gmail an document send in Word wants to open in Excel

I have sent an Word document to an contact. I want to print the document afterwards and in gmail I select download but after requesting that Microsoft Word be used to open the document, it reverts to Microsoft Excel resulting in an error. Only way to print these document is to select view and save in Google text and print from the Google site.
