Pop up box says another version of Firefox is already open right after installing it

Because Firefox was giving me such troubles, I uninstalled it, deleted my profile folder, emptied my trash to start fresh. I downloaded the latest version of Firefox and dropped it into my Application folder. When I double-click it, a box pops up and says: Close Firefox. A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time.
