Primary Password

I was creating a primary password and for some reason it "glitched" or "stuttered" and it created the password without me knowing what it was. I tried several combinations that could be close to the one I was inputting. Can I uninsall Firefox and reset the password?

If you remove the Primary Password without knowing what it is, I think you also will lose the saved logins. See: Reset your Primary Password if you've forgotten it.

As a precaution, grab a copy of the logins.json and logins-backup.json files here:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, find the Profile Folder row and click the "Open Folder" button on that row. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows File Explorer.

Scroll down to logins.json and single click it, then Ctrl+click logins-backup.json to add it to your selection. Then right-click > Copy either of them (the context menu might have the word Copy or a button with two overlapping rectangles. Then change to a folder Firefox won't touch, like your desktop, and right-click > Paste.

After resetting your primary password, in the profile folder, try renaming logins.json to loginsBAD.json and renaming logins-backup.json to logins.json and see whether Firefox's Passwords page can list the previously saved logins. If either file is removed, you can paste in a copy from the backup you made.
