With today's upgrade to Firefox 136.0 for Mac OSx Sequoia 15.3.1, I am now being prompted for my Primary Password upon startup. Why? (I am NOT using Sync.)

It must be bug 1946121.

That certainly seems to explain what I'm encountering as of today.

Bug 1946121 is listed as "fixed" in Firefox Release 137.0.2, but it is NOT fixed in Release 137.0 which became available today.

137.0.2 would be after 137.0. Where did you get that number from? 137 is latest release I can see -can't find 137.0.2 anywhere - saw 138 mentioned.

https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/discussions/forced-password-to-open-ff/m-p/89338 But ? awesome, now they only need to fix password popup when entering the settings page but the major pain is fixed at least

Password popup when entering the settings page, this is always the case with Firefox 137.0, is this normal?

When Firefox 136.0 was pushed out to my iMac running Mac OSx Sequoia 15.3.1on March 6, 2025, I began to be prompted for my Primary Password upon every startup.

Yesterday, April 1, 2025, Firefox 137.0 (aarch64) (I somehow misread the release number as 137.0.2 yesterday) was pushed out to my iMac now running Mac Sox Sequoia 15.3.2. and I am STILL being prompted for my Primary Password upon every startup, contrary to what's stated in the 137.0 release notes.

It seems like this issue is being ignored. Since March 6, 2025, I have been prompted to enter my Primary Password upon starting Firefox on my iMac, first on Firefox 136 under Mac OSx Sequoia 15.3.1, and, since April 1, 2025, on Firefox 137.0 under Mac OSx Sequoia 15.3.2.

Default Settings Change: Sometimes, updates can change default settings. It's possible that the new version has enabled the Primary Password feature by default, even if it was previously disabled.

Security Enhancements: Firefox may have introduced new security features or enhancements that require a Primary Password for added protection of your saved passwords, regardless of whether you are using Sync.
Profile Settings: If your Firefox profile settings were altered during the upgrade, it might have enabled the Primary Password feature.
Add-ons or Extensions: If you have any password management extensions or add-ons, they might be influencing this behavior.

What You Can Do:

Check Password Manager Settings: Go to Preferences > Privacy & Security > Logins and Passwords and see if the option for "Use a Primary Password" is enabled. You can disable it if you do not want to use it.

Review Add-ons: Check if any installed add-ons might be affecting password management.

Reset Preferences: If you want to revert to the previous behavior, you can reset your Firefox preferences to default settings, but be cautious as this will change other settings as well.

If you prefer not to use a Primary Password, disabling it in the settings should resolve the prompt at startup.

Mutaz Awad:

Thank you for your reply, but none of this applies to the situation.

I have had "Use a Primary Password" option (formerly know as Master Password) for years, but until March 6, 2025 (with the Firefox 136 update), I was never prompted to enter it upon startup.

This error was reported in Bugzilla Bug 1946121, but even though a comment on that bug from 22 days ago says "Verified as fixed on Windows 11 and MacOS 13.2.1 using Firefox Release 136.0.2", it is still broken on MacOX 15.3.2 using Firefox 137.01 (aarch64).

1. Check for Further Updates: Since you mentioned that the issue persists in Firefox 137.01, keep an eye on future updates. Mozilla frequently releases patches and updates that may address ongoing issues.

   2. Revert to an Earlier Version: If the issue is significantly impacting your use of Firefox, you might consider temporarily reverting to an earlier version of Firefox that did not have this problem. However, be cautious with this approach, as older versions may have security vulnerabilities.
   3. Monitor Bugzilla: Continue to monitor the Bugzilla report for updates or workarounds provided by developers or other users. Sometimes, users share temporary fixes or settings that can help mitigate the issue.
   4. Contact Mozilla Support: If you haven't already, consider reaching out to Mozilla Support directly. They may have additional insights or be able to escalate the issue if it's affecting multiple users.
   5. Community Forums: Engage with the Firefox community forums. Other users may have experienced similar issues and could have found workarounds or solutions that are not documented in Bugzilla.
   6. Consider Alternative Password Management: If the Primary Password prompt is a significant inconvenience, you might explore using a dedicated password manager that integrates with Firefox, which could provide a different approach to managing your passwords without relying on Firefox's built-in feature.
