No suggestions when searching in the preferences?
Seemingly straightforward searches through the options like:
- "Reset firefox"
- "Clear cookies"
- "Empty cache"
None of these things pull up any results when searching the settings... Why?

You can search the knowledge base of this website for searching with such terms: Help -> Firefox Help
For searching items in Settings like about cache and cookies, simply search for those (i.e. keep it as simple as possible and do not add clear or empty or delete) and go to the result that applies.
Reset Firefox is not in settings, but can be found in "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support).
garciapiano, it seems that the search results match the exact string searched for, as opposed to matching any of the individual search terms?
This is useful when you have been directed to change a specific setting, such as "When you open a link, image or media in a new tab, switch to it immediately", as otherwise any setting that contains the term "it" would be found? But then finding any of the words searched for, or all of them regardless of order, also of course has its uses in other circumstances.
If you find no results for a phrase, you can try reducing the number of terms.
The settings certainly seemed easier to find in the old days. I don't recall them even having a search function as it wasn't needed.
Things that make sense to developers don't necessarily seem sensible to normal people. Without knowing I'd expect "Reset Firefox" to be under Settings or failing that on the Tools menu. I'd never think to look under Help and if I did I'd assume that "More Troubleshooting Information" would simply display information and not include functions.
