I have a new Mac mini M2, and Firefox will not work. I have had zero problems with FF on my old mini.

I am operating MacOS 13.3.1 (a), and trying to get Firefox 113.0 to work. It will start, but, after running through the new-install windows, it will not load any pages, such as google, and gets stuck in "a checking for updates" loop. Eventually, I have to force quit. I have removed all traces of previous versions from my system, and restarted, then done a clean install of FF, without loading any previous information, files, tabs, etc. Just the bare bones. All antivirus is off. No plugins other the the Open H264 and Widevine Content Decryption. No extensions. Set on standard privacy.

I have done this several times. Working in trouble shooting mode makes little difference. I can sometimes open 3 tabs before everything goes south.

Safari is working fine.

I'm about to give up on Firefox. Any help would be appreciated.

You can do a malware scan just to be sure.

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet, select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing when you open it. Please do the following to give us crash IDs that will help us understand more about the crash.

  1. Click the Finder' icon in the dock. On the menu bar, click the Go menu, hold down the option or alt key and select Library. A window will open containing your Library folder.
  2. Open the "Application Support" folder, the "Firefox" folder, the "Crash Reports" folder and finally the "submitted" folder.
  3. Open the 5 most recent files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
  4. Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.

Thanks in advance!

You can find more information and troubleshooting steps in the Troubleshoot Firefox crashes (closing or quitting unexpectedly) article.

You can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works, you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. I created a new profile, and for the first time, it checked and said that the software was up to date. However, nothing else changed. When I tried to load a web page such a google, I just got the back-and-forth black ball, and nothing loading. After several minutes, I tried to quit, got the beachball, and it crashed after about two minutes.

I restarted, and this time, it also got stuck on "checking for update" as it had before. And everything else, no page load and can't quit, the same.

Same on subsequent restarts and attempts.

Here are the three most recent crash report numbers. bp-f5b14637-96bf-458f-8c40-634be0230510 bp-75f5599e-22bc-48e7-ac8e-77c040230510 bp-19055a69-c9e1-45b7-b6e4-e9e080230510

Safari is still working fine.

Further suggestions would be appreciated.

Update. If I start in trouble-shooting mode, the system still remains forever in the "checking for update" cycle, however, pages such as google will load, but only after half an hour. (I haven't actually timed it exactly.) If I reload, same thing, after another half an hour I will get the page. When I try to quit, it crashes. Most recent reports are below, the most recent one (at the bottom) is while in trouble shooting mode.

Any ideas? Thanks

So sorry to have to give up on Firefox after years as my default browser. I made one more attempt to get it to work. I deleted it, restarted the computer, did a clean, most-basic install. Same problems, even in trouble shooting mode.

On the off-chance that anyone has any idea, here are the most recent crash reports. The last one in TS mode.

I'll try again when Apple next updates the OS, but it looks like I will be on Safari for the foreseeable future. :-(

Thank you, thank you, thank you. The issue was the proxy setting, changing it from the default of "use system proxy settings" to "no proxy." I have no idea why that would make a difference, as, to the best of my knowledge and investigation, there are no proxies set for any of my accounts or services. But, at this stage, I don't care as it works. I have delayed my response to test everything and all appears to be back to the good old Firefox experience I am used to. Again, your suggestion is very much appreciated.
