"Open previous windows and tabs on startup" doesn't seem to work for me - I check off the right box in Settings. (see attached file) but it doesn't work. I use Firefox as a dedicated app for one project, so would like it to open right at the four pages I always use.

Odd, because this USED to work, but has stopped doing so in the last week.

Laptop using Windows 11 64.

I downloaded the newest version, also signed in and out, but no help.

Thanks.

See:

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes".

  • do not clear the "Browsing history"
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" in Firefox 102+ honors exceptions and keeps cookies with an allow exception, previous versions removed all cookies
  • clearing "Site settings" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data

I used the first link before and it didn't do the job.

For the rest, very sorry, but I cannot understand what you are suggesting I do. I attach the file of what I do not understand. Are you saying I should or should not "use custom settings for history"? Should or should not use "clear history when Firefox closes" (and I don't see where to do that on Settings). Should or should not clear "Site Settings"?

Again, thanks!

You can use "Clear history when Firefox closes", but clearing the history this way includes all session data and open tabs are considered history, so closed tabs can't/won't be reopened. You can remove all others, but keep in mind that clearing the "Site settings" removes all exceptions and will cause all cookies to get cleared. So clearing the history when you close Firefox overrides "Restore Previous Session" and clearing the "Site settings" overrides keeping cookies with an allow exception.

Thanks. Sorry, I still don't follow you. But I figured out I can do the thing I want at start-up by making my four select websites my Home pages.

Except for two or three occasions (long passed), my previous tabs are open when I start Firefox. In Settings > Privacy > History I use Custom settings for history : Remember browsing ... and Remember search .... Before exiting at the end of the day I use Clear recent history (ctl+shft+del) and remove Browsing and ..., Search and ..., Cache and Offline web site data. My "Home page" is a blank page.
