Posting on behalf of a user who hit the VPN inbound queue with a question better suited for this forum:

The tab bar, toolbar, and address bar placement in my Firefox Desktop browser has recently changed. I have been trying to revert these recent changes as they interrupt my current workflows.

I DO know which prior profile save contains the desired info however, it contains many files and I DO NOT KNOW which files I need for the bars to be restored. If you could provide me the name(s) of the file(s) that holds the bars data, I am probably saved, hopefully saved.

If this is about modifications to the Firefox user interface (Navigator Toolbox: #navigator-toolbox) then this can only be done via userChrome.css.

More info about userContent.css and userChrome.css in case you are not familiar: *https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

Thank you, Sir https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/SUMOsJR!

It was a request for assistance about the tab bar moving one place up, same for the Toolbar, and the Address Bar to the bottom. Being autistic (severe Asperger's) with severe ADHD, I had my Firefox set as per my needs, this for decades. Sure, small changes were around, but now, this was a massive change.

Tried to fix it, but all went far worse, so ended up with toolbar totally missing, for one, which I can't get back.

These settings were in the previous version stored locally, correct? Which file was that? If I know what file to be looking for, I can replace that one without the need to write a file. In the end, my settings were stored, which is proven by the fact that for decades these settings ported ver, until the last version, so, that is all I need, I reckon.

If not, say due to compatibility, or a different approach I am horribly screwed, I am utterly lost ... . For a week now I have not been able to do a darn thing for my job, due to these bars utterly misplaced, one even totally missing now due to an error on my behalf, rtrying to restore the bars. Not been warned, I took no preventive measure.

I DO have a backup of my old settings, dating from April 10 2022. Thus, those files I have. Meantime then, I got like 2000 more bookmarks and whatnot that I cannot miss!!!

Thank you. Xog.

The file userChrome.css is in a folder called chrome which is in your profile folder. If you don't know where that is, enter about:support or about:profiles in the address bar in a new tab. The latter also shows the cache folder (which is not what you want). The attached screenshot shows the top entries in about:support on my browser.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/TNorth Sir, I know this. I asked, what file from my backup that did not had this bars issue is needed to be restored? If I restore that file, all be probably good.

My issue is, that I even lost a whole bar (Tools) that I can't restore, I lost all bar settings, such as extension settings, etc. I am no coder, I do not know positions, sizes, ... ? How can I make a file containing all that data not understanding these basics? I can hardly remember half of all?

Hence: Which file of my Profile backup has this bar information? If I restore that file, all should in theory be fine ... ?

Thank you.

If you had a customised order of toolbars it would be in userChrome.css. I don't know what you mean by 'Tools'. These are my toolbars (from the top): Title bar (not shown by choice), Menu bar (contains the menu and I have moved other things to it), Navigation bar (address bar, search bar, back and forward buttons and 3 bar menu), Bookmarks bar (not shown by choice), Tabs bar (placed at the bottom by userChrome.css and a related stylesheet).

Is there any reason why you can't use the profile previously in use? If you can't, these articles tell you what data you can copy from it.

Mine were: Menu Bar at the top Address Bar/Tool Bar (shared Position (height) Bookmark Bar Tab Bar

Toolbar had all set as per my needs, but that one's totally gone somehow. Tools, AND Bar. And no way to restore this. Never had a .CSS file either, so. But I had this since the days of apeman, the earliest of the Mozilla FF days. Back then, I do not know where all was stored. Hence my question. Has to be somewhere, no?

Thank you, I'll dive into both links.

According to the site https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data I need: Xulstore.JSON. Prefs.JS. Permissions.SQLITE. Content-Prefs.SQLITE.

Placed them over, and going for reboot. PS, might take a bit, my Perfect Disk is eager to the a full 16TB Offline Defragmentation ... .

Will keep you posted.

Thank you very much, allready.  :)

... All went well, Tool Bar is fully restored, except ... Now the Tab Bar sits on second!!!! position all of the sudden. What gives? Why now on the second "row"? GOD this is such insanity. What now makes that the Tab Bar went to 2nd row, after MANY years of normal operation? I fail to grasp this ...

How do I bring it to the bottom, please, without touching the rest (as in: leave those where they are, naturally understanding that the Tab Bar is placed beneath, where it belongs, thus: Menu Bar Address Bar/Tool Bar (shared Position (height) Bookmark Bar Tab Bar) ?

Thank you.

You can look at this forum response for CSS code in userChrome.css for Firefox 89+ to move the tabs to the position below the Navigation Toolbar.

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

Thank you.

Below the URL Bar sits my Bookmarks Bar. Does the Tab Bar get under it? The Tab Bar has to come under the Bookmarks Bar ... . Reading the links, I did not see any information about this, or I might not have understood, my autism often plays tricks on me.  :(

Also, all of the sudden, restoring those 4 files, my YouTube suddenly died on me, ending in a black endless loading.

My goodness, what a bloody mess all this is.

Thinking of restoring to a previous FF version, now, and have my old files entirely restored.  :(

EDIT: Oddly, YT does work in Private Window. ... Why in Private, but not in Normal?

Sorry, been working constantly (no sleep) to catch up, now that my Tool Bar was restored. The missing bar made, that I could not get to my extensions. Am I glad that's back.

YouTube: Caused by a "missing" but registered extension, this got fixed. The 3 month old backup file still had an extension that I dropped meanwhile, and replaced with a better. But this is solved.  :)

Also: dove into the CSS file, but ... it changes more than I want to. I have not found the right command lines that work for my specific issue. This is my setup now: (see picture). It has to stay this way, with the exception that the Tab bar (now under Menu Bar) has to come below the Bookmarks Bar.

The code lines I found, alters more, thus, I cannot use these. Either a second bar moves to X, or icons alter, or ... .

I am so sorry to annoy you all, with my issue. I never had this before since the early FF versions, and thus, I am at a total loss.  :( I <= Expert Noob in action.

Edit: Removed old picture, added new one, higher Quality.

I have been using the code below since version 89 although I updated it recently following advice elsewhere. You will have to remove the blank spaces in the links.

So much catching up to do ... . Back to work.

Drop in \Profiles\Profile Name\Chrome once all is set in About:Config, aye?

Once you are on one of those pages, you can download the file instead of copying and pasting by right-clicking the button labelled Raw and selecting Save link as. It's probably simpler for you to copy and paste the code from each (in the order I mention) in your userChrome.css file (or an associated stylesheet) but you could put the files in the chrome folder and add this code to the top of your userChrome.css file. I don't know the exact profile path on Windows. Make sure all files are in the chrome folder and that Windows hasn't added .txt to the names.
