"Bookmarks & Other Bookmarks " Part Two due to topic being "Archived"

Greetings!

First jscher2000, & Cor-el, I Absolutely Thank both of You for the Time/Effort that you have put in to helping me, &,..... If I have appeared to be "Ride/Crude &/or Socially Un-acceptable" in my statements, I Absolutely Apologize. And, even though My "Bookmarks Situation" is still not "Normal" & it is time consuming to use,..... It is far better than what it was initially, & I Thank both of You, for having gotten it to that point.

Having gotten caught up a little with my work, & still not having the issue of my "Bookmarks" not taken care of,I went back to the long thread of "Bookmarks & Other Bookmarks " only to find this problem "Archived", without it having been Solved.

This issue has been ongoing since March 4, 2021, where my "Bookmarks" were missing, to where my "Other Bookmarks" are getting placed within My Main Bookmarks.

jscher2000, on June 7,2021 , You stated:

"I have no explanation for inability to drag and drop as long as your database is healthy."

Sir,... What Data/ Tests, would show whether my Database is Healthy or not? After all that has been done to get my Bookmarks to the point where they are now, did any of the previous procedures indicate anything about the "Health of My Database"?

cor-el, on June 13,21, you stated:

"If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

This can be caused by a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created.

My last post was on June 14,2021 where I posted data, that appeared to suggest that my "places.sqlite database sane" (meaning "Normal"?) And that my "The database is coherent"., ... (Which in My thinking means that it should be understandable, possibly "Healthy"?)

But Gentlemen,..... I'm not "well versed" in the usage of a Computer/ Browser etc., & If "My Livelihood" was dependent upon repairing/diagnosing Soft Ware Applications, .... I'd Starve to Death.

But, if an application were related to my work,.... I'd have somewhat firmer ground to stand upon, which is why I posted June 14, 21:

"If this were a ECU for a Walk-n Refrigeration unit, I'd know what these "Codes" above meant, but here, I don't have a clue whether the data is pointing out a problem, or stating that what is causing the "Bookmarks" problem, is not to be found in the above Data."

With that said,.... Cor-el, If I,...... " rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder."

Will the rebuilt & restored bookmarks from that "recent JSON backup" also be corrupt, since they are a copy of what is being used?

"You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created."

But not "Bookmarks"?

I'm curious,...... Should I do a "Re-set/Refresh" Again?

And, since "The health" of my browser may be an issue, should I un-install, & re-install Firefox?

Also,.... Firefox, & many other applications have been slow to "Load" &/or "Operate" at times, & despite having Software such as "Privacy Badger", "NoScript", "Ghostery", & "Malwarebytes" all operating, as well as "Windows Security", & "Ccleaner"... I'm thinking that somehow, that something, perhaps "Bit Coin Mining", has latched on to my PC.

What do Ya'll recommend?

Hi David, threads are automatically locked after six months; for the benefit of other readers, the previous one can be found here: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1328160

My last suggestions was to move the contents of the "inner" Other Bookmarks folder to the "outer" Other Bookmarks folder:

After that, we had this exchange:

We have a Failure to Communicate Jscher,..... Per my last post at Today, at 7:55PM: "I can not,.... Copy & Paste, nor drag, .......anything, be it the Full Folder, nor specific files, from the column on the right, to any category in the column on the left. " Nothing will move from the right column to the left column.

I have no explanation for inability to drag and drop as long as your database is healthy. Are you able to add new bookmarks normally?

For copy/paste, you would open the destination folder and paste on the right side.

I've bolded the part that seems not to have been addressed in the other thread.

Greetings jscher,

And, this also was part of that Conversation:

""I have no explanation for inability to drag and drop as long as your database is healthy. Are you able to add new bookmarks normally?"

jscher,..... All new Bookmarks were & are, still falling in the Main Bookmarks Folder, no matter what I was advised to do.

"Other Book Marks", when clicked, shows another "Other Book Marks" folder, which when clicked, shows what I considered to be my Temporary Bookmarks", where newly selected Bookmarks used to go.

"For copy/paste, you would open the destination folder and paste on the right side."

"I've bolded the part that seems not to have been addressed in the other thread."

Which I told You,.... It didn't work, I'm thinking that I may have stated that I tried moving them from the right to the Left Column? Either way,.... It doesn't work.

So how do I determine the "Health" of Firefox, which by the way, a "New Problem" as of today, has risen,... The "Bold", "Italics", "Insert a link", etc. buttons now will not work.

Is it possible to un-install Firefox, install a new Firefox App, & then reload my Bookmarks, hopefully with them then being placed where they should be?

Firefox uses the same folder for new bookmarks as the last one you saved in. You can see that stored in about:config here:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.bookmarks.defaultLocation and pause while the list is filtered

The value for "Other Bookmarks" is unfiled_____ but it might be simpler to use the Reset button at the right end of the row rather than typing or pasting a new value.

Of course, you can modify the save folder during the save process. Make sure the browser.bookmarks.editDialog.showForNewBookmarks preference has its default value of true.

So how do I determine the "Health" of Firefox, which by the way, a "New Problem" as of today, has risen,... The "Bold", "Italics", "Insert a link", etc. buttons now will not work.

The "Verify Integrity" test, which your Firefox passes, tests the health of the Places database. As I said, you have ruled out that problem.

Is it possible to un-install Firefox, install a new Firefox App, & then reload my Bookmarks, hopefully with them then being placed where they should be?

I assume you don't want to blow out all your data, so before doing anything drastic, try creating a new profile as a test and see whether bookmarks work any better there.

First, create a fresh bookmark backup in a convenient location, such as your Documents folder. Ref. Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

New Profile Test

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Take a quick glance at the page and make a mental note of which Profile has this notation: This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted. That is your current default profile.

Click the "Create a New Profile" button, then click Next. Assign a name like Sept2021, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

Firefox will switch your default profile to the new one, so click the Set as Default Profile button for your regular one to avoid an unwanted surprise at your next startup.

Scroll down to Sept2021 and click its Launch profile in new browser button.

Firefox should open a new window that looks like a brand new, uncustomized installation. (Your existing Firefox window(s) should not be affected.) Please ignore any tabs enticing you to connect to a Sync account or to activate extensions found on your system to get a clean test.

If you Restore your fresh bookmark backup here, are you able to edit bookmarks?

If so, you may want to generate a new manual backup from this profile and try applying it to your regular profile (that would be faster than migrating all your data to this new profile).

When you are done with the experiment, you can close the extra window without affecting your regular Firefox profile. (Sept2021 will remain available for future testing.)

Greetings Jscher,

My Apologies for taking so long to reply,... My Work/Life has been busier than ever.

"I assume you don't want to blow out all your data, so before doing anything drastic, try creating a new profile as a test and see whether bookmarks work any better there."

I'm going to show my lack of Knowledge about all of this here:

"Firefox will switch your default profile to the new one, so click the Set as Default Profile button for your regular one to avoid an unwanted surprise at your next startup."

(I just tried to Bolden/Highlight your quoted comments & that button will not work,... all that it does is add more quotation marks, whereas about a year ago, it would "Bolden/Highlight" what I wished.)

With the "New Profile" up,.... If I'm understanding correctly, I am to select the "original profile" as the default?

And Jscher,... Isn't this what was done in March & June 2021, in an attempt to correct this problem?

And, on Oct. 4 - 2021, without any action on my part,..... New Bookmarks, like as before began to be placed in the "Other Bookmarks" Tool Bar/Folder.

On the about:profiles page, after you create a new profile, your current one -- the one displaying the about:profiles page -- will no longer be the default profile. To make sure your current profile remains the default profile, click its "Set as default profile" button.

Then you can go ahead and test the new profile. If you restore your manual bookmark backup in the new profile, does the Library window let you rearrange bookmarks?

Firefox follow the "same as last" method. So if you save your next bookmark to a different folder, Firefox should stored that one in the previously mentioned preference browser.bookmarks.defaultLocation.

I haven't performed any of the Intensive Recommendations, as of yet Jscher, due to My Work requiring access to many of the Files/folders stored away in the now Four Bookmarks that I have, & Losing that Data, would cause utter chaos.

Can I Delete Fox Fox & then Restore My Data on a New Application?

more options

Hi David, please don't delete anything. I don't think that will be helpful and you may end up much worse off.

The data you would be able to restore to your new Firefox profile after reinstallation would be a backup from your current data on your computer. It is likely to be laid out the same way. The only question is whether it will be easier to reorganize in a new profile. The new profile test is the safest way to explore that.
