Missing Backspace functionality

Why did Firefox developers simply disable "Backspace" instead of making it a selection in "Settings"? I understand why some users can't stay "focused" and lose typed data, but the rest of us really like the backspace function to go back a page.

Yes you can re-enable it (& I did so) using "About:Config" but that's akin to REGEDIT and not for the faint of heart...

Am I going to have to make this edit every time FF Updates? and on each of my PCs?
