Cannot open Firefox with version 87.0

more options

After installing Firefox Version 87.0 today, I haven't been able to open the application. Each time I try I get the following error message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I have tried both running the installer again to fix it and downloading a new copy of the installer and running it, neither of which solved the issue.

I found a previous thread from 2018 detailing the same issue (wherein the chosen solution was to make sure that your firewall wasn't blocking firefox's access to the internet) however;

A) I can't even start the firefox application, let alone see if it can access the internet. B) I tried making my antivirus application ignore it (Malwarebytes), but when I tried to do so it said I didn't have permissions to access the file.

To be clear mine is the ONLY account on the computer, and is the admin account as a result. My pc is running on Windows 7 64 bit in case that is relevant (though I didn't see anything in the update notes to suggest that they're ending support for Windows 7 just yet).

I don't want to sound like a cliché, but have you tried doing a regular shutdown and restart of Windows? The purpose is to resolve any transient privilege issues that could be limiting Firefox, as well as to complete any queued/deferred updates that may be waiting for your next restart.

If problems continue, can you confirm that firefox.exe is indeed at the location mentioned in the error message, and therefore we could focus on a possible permission problem?

Note: I have also tried changing the ownership of the file manually, but it gives me an error saying "Unable to set new owner on firefox.exe. Access is denied."
