The offer to speed up my Firefox should have included the info that in doing so, my bookmarks would all disappear. If anyone knows how to get them back, I'd appreciate the info. I'm disappointed in Firefox - unexpected outcomes should not be part of an update. While in theory I like the Firefox system better than Chrome, I have to go back to Chrome to protect myself from further "surprises".

Sorry to hear about that. The "Refresh" should carry over your bookmarks, saved logins, and open tabs if it runs properly, but sometimes it glitches.

Please check your Windows desktop for a folder named Old Firefox Data -- this is where Firefox put your previous profile folder with all its data files. Do you have that?

Next, I suggest doing a regular shutdown and restart of Windows to clear file locks, potential permission glitches, and of course to complete any pending Windows updates.

Now back in Firefox, if you check the Restore menu, did the Refresh bring over any of your bookmark backups? If so, try restoring the latest one and let me know whether it worked:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer
