I'm now using Thunderbird 78.6. When I reply to an email, more often than not I have to refer to other emails - from the same person, on the same subject, etc. So I want read and unread emails to be available (i.e. listed) all the time, as they used to be, without any effort from me. Now, I have to keep clicking on Unread. I can't find any way of asking for unread emails to be available all the time. Also, when I search for emails, the list can be in either of two formats, the original with one line per email, and another one that gives more information but takes several lines, so fewer emails are on the screen at once. I can't find any way of saying I always want the first format.

If View/Threads is All, unread and read messages are displayed; press Alt if the View menu is hidden.

Classic Search (Ctrl+Shift+F) shows just message headers while searching an account, while Global Search (Ctrl+K) shows message previews while searching all accounts. Quick Filter Bar (Ctrl+Shift+K) is for searching the current folder. Choose the method depending on the scope of the search.
