Does anyone know the status of the ADDON "Close tab on ESC"? It no longer works on Thunderbird 78.5.0. I read old discussions about making this an "enhancement" in Thunderbird and it was decided that it was not going to happen with no really good reason not to. Then the addon came out and worked fine for two year stints at a time, until new versions of Thunderbird came out that rendered the addon obsolete. That happened with 78/5.0 for me. Anyone know if this will be fixed? In the mean time, I have found that CTRL - F4 will close a tab if anyone else is having the same problem. ESC sure is more convenient as a one finger "exercise," especially with where the ESC key is located.

I saw tbkeys and tbkeys-lite mentioned, but didn't see how to make the proper change. Looked a little harder and played around. If you download tbkeys-lite addon and install it, then go to Tools/Add-ons then under tbkeys-lite entry for the installed addon select "Custom Thunderbird Keybindings" then Options, then in the section for "Main key bindings" create the following entry: {"esc": "func:CloseTabOrWindow"} and delete all the others and any trailing comma. This will act just like the "Close tab on Esc" addon. It will not refresh mail like the remapped "u" key is set to do in tbkeys. It will just close the tab. Perfect! I tried to add it to the lower section labeled "Compose key bindings", but it would not work there. Don't understand why, but it worked in the "Main key bindings" section only. I'll leave "well enough" alone. ;)

The tbkeys-lite add-on has this assigned to 'U' already, but you can change it to 'esc':

"Compose key bindings" are shortcuts for the mail compose window. For example if you put "ctrl+up": "cmd:cmd_increaseFont", "ctrl+down": "cmd:cmd_decreaseFont" in this field then you can increase and decrease the font size of selected characters with control and arrow up/down.

boshuda, you failed to define, describe, or lead one to, "THE MAIL COMPOSE WINDOW."
