I have a customer who is unable to browse to any websites after version 81.0.2 was installed. They are also unable to open Options and other Menu items. Only Toolbar Menu item that worked was Help > About. I have tried using Firefox in Safe Mode, I have refreshed Firefox, and I have renamed the AppData > Roaming > Mozilla folder forcing it to create a brand new user profile. The only security programs running are Windows Defender. Chrome and Edge work fine, so customer will use one of those until Firefox is fixed.

Valgt løsning

I was onsite with the customer having this problem. With Firefox closed, I downloaded and installed C++ 2019 Redist. (x64) using PatchMyPC. This solved the problem. Able to browse to websites with no problem.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Thank you FredMcD but unfortunately following those steps did not solve the problem. Now a second customer has contacted me and has the same issue. Downloaded and installed with the latest version - 82.0.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Yes, unfortunately the problem still occurs even after starting Firefox in Safe Mode.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

These are residential customers using Microsoft's Windows Defender, so I do not think security programs are causing the problem.

Went onsite for my first customer experiencing this problem, I uninstalled Firefox, restarted PC, reinstalled Firefox with latest version 82.0.2 (64-bit). While re-installing, got the following error (I do not recall seeing this error during previous re-installations): "firefox.exe - System Error The code execution cannot proceed because VCRUNTIME140_1.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem." I continued with the Firefox installation but was still unable to navigate to any websites. Also, 2 Firefox processes remains open and need to be manually closed via Task Manager.

Searching online, I tried unregistering and re-registering the VCRUNTIME140.dll file via Command Prompt > Ran as Administrator. I also tried to install Visual C++ (not sure if it was the latest version) but neither of these fixed the problem. I continued with the Firefox re-installation again but am still unable to navigate to any websites. Also, 2 Firefox processes remains open and need to be manually closed via Task Manager.

While posting this today I found this exact same problem (and possible solution) we are experiencing on these PCs: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1290656 "Firefox Installer gives error "VCRUNTIME140_1.dll was not found". I will try the solution mentioned, but now my question is why is this happening? This was originally posted in June 2020 - any news since then? One last item - here is a bug report referenced in above post : https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1624546 .
