Since latest windows update pages load at an extremely slow pace

more options

Hi! As the title states, since the latest windows update (am now on 19041.508), anytime I go on a webpage on Firefox it's extremely slow to load, however once loaded the page is as fast as it should be!

I don't have any antivirus other than windows defender, and disabling it/the windows firewall doesn't fix the issue, so it doesn't seem to be linked to that either, on the online forums such as this one I found it was also common to have issues caused by hardware acceleration, playing with that setting does not help either.

Another friend of mine has the same issue as me since the last update, so I'm assuming it's not something unique to my situation, is this a known issue for which a fix is available? Searching for one has yielded only outdated results.

Thanks a lot!

Well I don't know what changed. I kind of stopped using firefox and used chrome for regular browsing needs while using firefox for more private stuff, I had noticed that at bootup the issue wasn't there and it'd come in a couple of minutes after booting up, last night noticed it wasn't really there anymore, and now it works fine, so yay? Still don't know the root cause of the issue though... I believe I might have a problem with my computer though since its networking capabilities are running amuk. For example an internet speed test doesn't get the full speed the ethernet cable gets, but running the exact same test in an ubuntu VM running off that computer gets the full speed??? So yeah, wack stuff, but at least it works. If ever someone stumbles on here in the future, I guess be patient? Hope for the best! :)

Have a good day!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hi Fred! Thanks for your input, sadly it did not fix the issue, in fact it almost feels as though it was even slower with the safe mode enabled! Would this go to show the problem is OS based rather than Firefox based?

Thanks!

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support to see if that has effect.

Hi! So I tried both of your troubleshooting solutions, messing around in the firewall didn't work, however when booting from safe mode with networking, firefox had no issues, what now then?

Thanks again for you help! :)

That means something on your system is causing the issue. As a test, disable your protection programs.

Sadly that did not do it, the only protection I have is windows defender, which I disabled, when booting up, Firefox was as fast as expected, but after a little while the slowness came back, even though no protection software was enabled at the time, I'm quite lost to be quite frank.

Thanks again!

MemTest LAST UPDATED : 12/04/2020 Could you please run a tool from http://memtest.org/ in order to check the integrity of your RAM?

You will need a thumb or disk drive to install it on.

Do you let Windows handle the page file or did you set a fixed size ? If you use a fixed size for the page file then try the former and let Windows handle the page file.

My RAM's fine according to memtest, as for the page file I'm assuming you're talking about the pagefile.sys? I let windows handle it's size, but I doubt that it uses it a lot, since my machine has 32Gb of RAM (for when I'm doing heavy simulations for work), and it never uses it all when I'm not actually working!

Thanks still for help troubleshooting :)

I checked both and neither seemed to have anything out of the ordinary, the problem seems to be spreading to Chrome as well however, so I'm very much starting to believe the problem is based on Windows (which would coincide in it taking part due to the latest update I guess?) and not firefox, I'm currently attempting a soft reinstallation of Win10 in the hopes this fixes my issue, I'll report back on the results that came from this operation! :)

Welp, the soft windows 10 reinstall fixed the issue on the Chrome side of things, but not on Firefox, any other ideas on what I could do?
