Firefox 78 (PC, 64bit W10) pauses after pressing return

I've been using Firefox for many (many) years, but the latest version is driving me mad. We are limited to high latency satellite internet, which I fully understand, but the current version of Firefox is painfully slow to respond after hitting "return".....

If I type in the URL box, or something in the search box (being old fashioned I still use the search box in the middle of the screen, I don't like typing in the URL box no matter how much "they" highlight it) when I hit return NOTHING HAPPENS (at least for a while!). Initially I thought I had a faulty keyboard, or that I was hitting shift by mistake, but when I started being more careful and taking note I realised that the slowness is Firefox. It can take several seconds of zero apparent activity before the two dots start flashing in the tab header.

The machine is high spec, not under load, and no other applications seem to be suffering. I do accept that the high latency means that transactions take some time, but the delay appears to be before Firefox starts doing anything - the screen does not change, no alternating dots in the tab header, nothing happening in the tab footer etc. I've repeatedly found myself pressing return again, thinking I missed!!

Is this a "new feature"? Is there anything I can do about it? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Just spent some time playing with this, after being forced to another network connection due to an outage. It appears that this doesn't happen with an "normal" fast (low latency) internet connection - it that case everything behaves normally. However switching to a high latency (700ms) satellite connection causes the problem to show itself. I'd guess that there is some network activity happening prior to the "tab label" showing the two alternating dots, and I'd guess it's several small or single packet exchanges because that's what highlights latency most.

My conclusion is that there's nothing I can do about it, but if the developers want to avoid us poor rural "satellite" folks from wearing out our keyboards by repeatedly hitting enter because we think it's taking so long that we must have hit shift, perhaps adjust the code to update those two dots before doing anything else?
