Firefox version 73.0 - PDF icon Firefox in the explorer

more options

I've updated Firefox 72.02 to Firefox 73.0 and now in these version there is an ugly PDF-icon, see my example see below. How can I change this ugly icon as before?

In the meanwhile I have also cleared the cache, uninstall Firefox, deleted the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) and restarted system. Thereafter I've runned Windows Disk Cleanup and re-install Firefox.

But the problem is not solved with all these actions = the ugly PDF icon Firefox in the explorer still remains! On the date of 01/03/18 I had already brought this up and got the solution for it, but now this does not help, see: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1197879

Hi SpeedyKepke, If you want to change the icon to the default Adobe and want your .pdf files to open with Adobe Reader instead:

In Windows file explorer, right-click on a PDF file and select Open With -> Choose Another App In the window that opens select Adobe Reader and check the box next to

  • Always Use This App To Open .PDF Files

then click OK.

Hi Robert, thank you for your answer. I know the proposed method, however, I am not a fan of Adobe Reader. Firefox is my standard browser, I want to view the PDF files via Firefox and not in Adobe Reader. I also have 2 other programs for creating or handling PDF files, namely Nitro Pro and PDF architect, but I want to view downloaded or created PDF files in Fierfox. I want the nice Firefox icon back on all the PDF files.

File icons are assigned to files through Windows file type association and uses the branded icons from within the application. Unless there is some sort of Windows hack utility for changing file icons, you might be able to install an older version of Firefox and have a different icon but, since it's a copyrighted icon it would probably revert to the newest icon anyway. The only other option that I can think of is to create a shortcut for your each of your pdf files and store the files themselves where they are not readily visible. Shortcut icons offer the flexibility of even being able to use a custom made icon.

In addition to all of the above, some users have experienced pdf files -

Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows This usually happens because you chose Firefox as the program to always use for a particular action, such as opening a certain type of file.

You might consider setting pdf files to open in GoofyReader (or whatever file icon that you like better) and right-click -> open with -> Firefox.
