I have (or had) several sites pinned so that they would always appear when I opened a new tab. I use them like bookmarks. Rather than add them to the bookmarks bar, I keep them there so I don't have to expand the tool bar menu and can see everything at once. Unfortunately, all the tiles on my new tab page are now missing, and there is also no cogwheel present where I can adjust the settings. I did not have Firefox sync before but recently turned it on. However, the tiles were still there initially after I signed in. They didn't disappear until the next day. Any ideas how I can fix this? Thank you!

Do you still see these websites listed when you check this pref on the about:config page?

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned => websites pinned to a tile
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked => websites removed by clicking the X (Dismiss) button in a tile

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).

If you lost personal data then it is possible that a new default-release profile folder has been created. See "Determine if Firefox has created a new profile":

You can open the about:profiles page via the location bar to check whether multiple profiles are present and what profile Firefox currently is using.

I still see all of the websites I pinned when I search for browser.newtabpage.pinned => websites pinned to a tile on the about:config page.

It looks like there's only one profile in use, and all of my bookmarks transferred over.

If the pinned sites are listed on the about:config page, how do I get them to appear again on new tabs? It's good to know that the data hasn't been lost. Thanks for your help!

Did you check the New Tab setting in "Options/Preferences -> Home" ?

See also this pref:

  • browser.newtabpage.enabled = true

I see a Home page section in options, but I don't see a section just for home. I just tried changing to the default homepage from my current one, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

This preference is correct: browser.newtabpage.enabled = true

I'm attaching a screenshot of the other newtabpage settings from about:config in case there's another setting there that may be causing the problem. Thanks, again!

Looks that all section on the new tab page are disabled and that none of the boxes for new tab content have a checkmark in "Options/Preferences - > Home".

What page code do you get if you inspect the page code (Ctrl+U) ?

  • "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Web Developer

Couldn't figure out how to delete my reply. Ignore this one. Our responses got crossed, so I'm going to look at your latest reply now.

I don't have a section with check boxes to check or uncheck relating to new tab content in Options, nor do I have a Home section there.

In about:config, there are a few sections marked "false," as you saw. I suspect some of them are sections that I removed from the new tab page, such as the top stories, which I don't need. Which ones do I need to change to true in order to get my sites back? I can see they're all still listed in the "pinned" setting.

Here are some more screenshots. The first few images are what I see in the general Options menu. The last screenshot is of a New Tab with the inspector open for your reference. You can see I have no cogwheel for Options on the New Tab page. Thanks for your patience.

Sorry about the confusion. What I wrote above doesn't apply to Firefox 60 ESR. In Firefox 60 ESR you need to click the cogwheel button on the about:newtab page to select what to show or modify browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.* prefs on the about:config page that are false and toggle their value to true with a double-click. In Firefox 60 you would need an extension to change the new tab URL.

What page do you get if you open a new tab and check the page source via Ctrl+U or via the right-click context menu like I wrote above?

Hi, thanks for your reply. I don't use this browser at home, so I had to wait until I got to work to reply. I'm attaching what I see on the new tab page with the inspector open. When I right-click on the new tab page, I don't get a context menu, so I got to this by clicking the three-line menu on the new tab page > Web Developer > Inspector. Also, as I mentioned before, part of the problem is that I have no cogwheel on the new tab page, so I can't get into that particular menu.

EDIT: The above is also true if I go to about:newtab rather than just opening a new tab. Thank you.

Another EDIT: I'm also attaching the sections on about:config that I just toggled to true.

If no one else has any more comments on this, I may just ask the IT people at my organization to take me off the ESR version in case that's the problem. Any ideas?
