Incomplete messages: I frequently receive messages from advertisers or newsletters containing multiple photos, posters, or the like, which never get filled in. They show up as empty boxes with a photo icon in the upper left corner. Sometimes they sit for many minutes and remain blank. The problem is not present when I use the Chrome browser.

What do I have to do to see the intended messages?

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

One issue that seems more common lately is Firefox's Tracking Protection feature. When it is blocking content in a page, a shield icon will appear at the left end of the address bar next to the padlock icon. This article has more info on managing this feature: Tracking Protection {web link}

It's ok in safe mode. How do I find out what add-ons are installed?

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or it could be Hardware Acceleration. How to disable Hardware Acceleration {web link}

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All Of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.

Turning off hardware acceleration did not help. "You have no add-ons." I have no antivirus software beyond Windows 10.

Did you check the links for Firefox's Tracking Protection? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1263521#answer-1233800

more options

I'm not concerned with tracking. I am concerned with not seeing content.

I'm not concerned with tracking. I am concerned with not seeing content.

But what if Firefox's Tracking Protection / Content Blocking feature is blocking the embedded content? Check for a "shield" icon toward the left end of the address bar and if you find it, click it and see whether it makes any difference to temporarily disable Content Blocking on the page.

No, No shield.

Does your email website have the option of loading images on demand instead of automatically? I would expect that to work the same in both Firefox and Chrome, but perhaps a local cookie is involved so they might work differently?

Are you sure you don't have any extensions? You can cross-check on the Troubleshooting Information page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down past "Application Basics" and "Firefox Features" to "Extensions". To share that list, you can select and copy the table that follows (not the entire page, please, that's too much information) using either Ctrl+c or right-click > Copy and then paste it into a reply. It will be messy, but we're used it.

There is one extension you may not find in Options => Add-ons => Extensions :

"ETP Search Volume Study 1.2 (etp-search-volume-study@shield.mozilla.org) "

But you will find it when you type in the address bar about:studies (and press Enter)

You can remove the extension and see if that will make a difference.

There is a "No Images? Click here" link on https://us9.campaign-archive.com/?u=e9a7c0886cbf85f8f007e81b3&id=381efe5087&e=8d96b94ee7

It doesn't produce the images.

Have you removed the Shield Study extension, like I suggested ?

The page uses images hosted on mailchimp.com. Is your Firefox able to view any of those images stand-alone in their own tab ("first party"):

I see one image: "Damn these Heels" when I follow your link. I don't know what you mean by "stand-alone in their own tab."

See also "Tools -> Page Info -> Media".

You can check the Web Console (Tools -> Web Developer) for messages about blocked content and about the presence of mixed or unsafe content.

You can check the Network Monitor to see if content is blocked or otherwise fails to load.

If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" (Mac: Command+Shift+R) to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

I selected "Standard" in Privacy and Security - Content Blocking. Now the images are displayed. So what is Private Windows? What are "trackers"? I can't, apparently, block trackers. I can't block cookies or nothing works. What are "Cryptominers" and "fingerprinters"? It looks like I need to list all the web sites I might ever want to use. This is getting a bit unwieldly.

Don't know how to find the "shield study extension." I sent all the stuff about extensions. Apparently I have none.

Like I mentioned before, all you have to do is type in the address bar about:studies and then press Enter.

You should find that extension listed there ......

But as you mention that the images are displayed since you changed your Content Blocking settings to "Standard" : problem solved, right ?
