New Firefox won't separate settings for NEW PAGE vs HOMEPAGE!

For years I have set my "Homepage" to a particular site, and set my "Open New Window" to blank, and I don't use Tabs. Now it seems the new FF browser lumps both of those into one setting and now I can't differentiate them! Is there a workaround, or do I have to change browsers?

As far as I know then Firefox never has separated the home page and what opens in a new window and always has opened the home page(s) in a new window.

Did you previously had an extension that allowed to open a blank new window ?

I think the user was talking about the home page and the new tab page. Both were greatly changed in the new Quantum.

And don't forget the Start Page.

Hi LBFFadventure, here's my understanding:

Home Page

Automatically shown in new windows or when you click the Home button. You can select to use a built-in page, or a blank page, or a custom URL.

Startup Page

Can be set to home page, or previous session windows and tabs, or blank page. In Firefox 62+, the blank page choice requires a visit to the about:config preferences editor:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste startup and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.startup.page preference to display a dialog where you can check/correct the value:

  • 0 => blank page
  • 1 => your home page(s) {default}
  • 2 => the last page viewed in Firefox
  • 3 => previous session windows and tabs

New Tab Page

Can be set to the built-in page or a blank page. To set a different page requires an extension such as New Tab Override: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for posting replies. So far none of the answers provide a solution. Thanks jsher2000 for a detailed response! I tried your suggestion but the change didn't stick. After reopening the browser that default setting was back to the "1". I don't believe it would have accomplished my need.

For greater clarity, a month ago I was able to set 3 settings in the options for the "homepage." I could designate a Homepage, separately a New window, and separately a New tab. I've had separate settings for those features for many years, update after update it remained that way, till now.

Now the options have combined "Homepage and New window" with only one drop down menu. There are a total of two settings, one for the combined "Homepage and new windows" and one for "New tabs". Thus I can operate new tabs however I like without affecting the "Homepage" setting, but I can no longer accomplish that separation of function for the "New windows" option.

I have never had an addon or extension for this, it was built into the normal "Options" page.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
