I'm at my wit's end here and considering just switching to Chrome after years of Firefox.

Firefox is hanging/freezing at frequent but random times when I use the browser. It happens anytime: scrolling, watching a video, switching tabs, opening a link, etc. and it will stay frozen from 10 seconds to 5 minutes. In addition to this, it will freeze in random intervals. Sometimes once in a hour, other times 5 times in 30 minutes. I get a "Not Responding" in the title bar and the mouse is just a spinning wheel until it unfreezes. It's infuriating!

I've gone through the entire hanging or freezing help page Mozilla has, as well as looked online but nothing has worked! Refreshing Firefox, reinstalling it, restarting my pc, clearing data and cache, nothing! It started 2-3 weeks ago and I'm I have no idea what's caused the browser to crash like this, I haven't changed anything major on my laptop since December.

I'm running Windows 10 1908, Firefox 66.0.2. I have a 7th gen i7 and 16gb of ram so I doubt it's a performance issue (especially since Chrome runs fine). Also, I do have McAfee anti-virus but it's not running any ad-on's on Firefox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As a test, disable McAfee. Surf only this website. Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

I just disabled McAfee, the issue is sporadic so it may take awhile of surfing to see if it flares up. Though, tbh I'm skeptical that McAfee is the issue since it's been installed on my laptop since November.

I did have a Windows 10 update 2 or 3 days before the issue got really bad, could that potentially be it?

Elements of McAfee have cause issues in the past. For that matter, so have Win 10 updates.

Oh OK, that's definitely good to know. Would you happen to know if it's something more specific within McAfee? I'm looking online but so far I've found more people with connectivity issues in Firefox with McAfee rather than freezing or hanging.

First, see if McAfee is the problem by disabling it. If it is, contact their support.

@cor-el, cool, I'll try out those links and see if it fixes anything. I've actually just updated my drivers (Intel HD 620 is my graphics card) a day or two ago and this issue is still around but less frequently.

@FredMcD I've had McAfee disabled since yesterday but the issue is still around, albeit less frequently. I'm not sure if it's because of McAfee specifically or other fixes I attempted but I'll keep an eye out.

Go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu > Help > Troubleshooting Information Page and take a look in the Accessibility section if accessibility is set to "true" there, go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check "Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser" and restart Firefox. I used to have the same problem and the issue was with a little app called Unchecky.
