Firefox continuously uses excessive ram causing pc to slow to a crawl
Running Linux Mint, Firefox is latest version, PC has 8GB of RAM, yet when running Firefox gradually uses more and more ram till all is gone, only fix, close and restart Firefox.
Removed all addons, no change! SET Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser to true, no change! Under performance set content process limit to 1, no change (I suspect this is a fake setting, it has no effect on number of processes!!)
PS Everyone else I know that uses Firefox has the same problem, is Mozilla trying to kill it?

You can check on the about:memory what is taking up the memory.
You can open "about:" pages via the location/address bar
- "about:" is a protocol to access special pages
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that page doesn't show any useful info, just masses of data, no doubt useful to the original coder, but not for users.

To be Checked and turned off unless needed for accessibility : Please : go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check (put a tick in the box) the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser.
Multi-Processor Support : Go to the 3 Bar Menu then Options --> General --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 1 = No Multiprocessor = slow again. Try 2 Restart Firefox after making these changes please. Note : Hardware Acceleration is for Video Card, Monitor to see if remain off or to turn back on.
Multi-processor Can completely disable it this way in about:config : dom.ipc.processCount set to 1 browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false
If low on ram. Firefox Extended Release Version : Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features but it has the latest security and stability fixes.

I have found a solution:
goto: about:config
find all instances of: browser.tabs.remote.autostart
set all to false, restart browser
That seems to wok as if has turned off the bl.... multi-processor cr.. and Firefox is now behaving, still using 2GB of RAM but thats all, so OK.
It seems to me this multi-processor idea is a beta one that has yet to be made reliable across the board, so should not be on by default for anyone on the 'stable' release.
Why are we having to search around for solutions to simply make a browser work as it should?
Ubuntu drove its user base away with a fanciful idea called Unity that it foist on everyone, it seems it took years and the loss of the majority of users (that wont be back) for it to relent, is Mozilla intent on learning the same lesson the same way?

Thanks, our postings seems to have crossed!! but seems you have a standard reply (if you read my OP you will see I already tried your 1st 2 options) but yes as I said in my last the 3rd method works, but we should'nt be having to do such things on a stable release!
HI, Please follow the instruction given as you have only partially turned off, you missed one.
Also if Accessibility features is still unchecked then can continue to have high usage.
Multi-processor and Multi-thread support is not in beta. The 1st came partially with version 56 then fully in version 57.

Thanks for that added tip, yes I`m aware Multi-processor and Multi-thread support came out of beta same editions ago, my point is that going by the number that have this same issue it seems it is still buggy, so should still be in beta!
As I said in the OP, I have many friends with the same issue, I will advise them to try the same, I`ll report back if it works for all.
Yes, agree it is a pain. Seems low system ram and older motherboards are the worst to suffer from this. I have had 32gig of ram for 6yrs so does not effect me to much but yes even I had to lower to default the cores.
The Accessibility Services issue keeps being fixed, then reverts to unchecked for some reason. This one causes extreme strain on the cpu and ram.
