How to stop Firefox ESR from disabling QuickProxy add-on?

Hi there,

as part of my work-related Firefox setup, I use QuickProxy tu quickly turn on and off a proxy. Nothing fancy, just a simple proxy switch sitting quietly in the status bar (restored with Status-4-evar). The reason is simple: I usually keep a large number of tabs open at the same time, and having the proxy turned on noticeably slows down loading and overall navigation. So I turn it off when not needed, as QuickProxy also allows me to start Firefox without turning on proxy, greatly speeding up restarts when memory leaks become too bad.

The issue: When I restart Firefox on either computer, the QuickProxy add-on is disabled, Firefox claims it's incompatible. The work-around proves it's actually perfectly compatible: First uninstall it from the addons page, then head to https://addons.mozilla.org, type QuickProxy in the search bar, install, Install, Restart. Then it reappears in the status bar and does its job throughout the session.

It is just very slow having to restart Firefox twice when trying to load around 150 tabs from a spinning HDD-equipped computer in an attempt to regain some reactivity.

The weird: I have two different profiles of Firefox that have this extension installed. One is synced with other like-named profiles on other computers, the other one uses another Sync account with other computers. Only one profile is affected.

Versions: Firefox ESR 52.6 Platforms: Windows 7 Pro, Mac OS X 10.11.6 Affected extension: QuickProxy 2009.07.19.1-signed.1-signed

Already tested: Solution provided in question 966832 (rather old) doesn't work for me: deleted extensions.sqlite and extensions.ini and compatibility.ini didn't help: I was asked to enable each extension one by one, which I did.

How do I stop Firefox from disabling this perfectly good extension? And why this inconsistency between profiles?

There are several QuickProxy add-ons. What is the web address of the program you are using?

Have you contacted its support?

I am sure the issue is not the extension itself, so there's no point in contacting them about what seems to be a Firefox issue.

As I said: "The weird: (…) Only one profile is affected."

The QuickProxy extension in question: https://addons.mozilla.org/es/firefox/addon/quickproxy/?src=search https://addons.mozilla.org/es/firefox/addon/quickproxy/?src=search

I don't know this add-on. But you still should contact its support. They may be able to help.

There doesn't seem to be a way to contact the author. Twitter feed idle since 2012, site not updated since 2010.

Would you please explain how it would be useful to contact the author about an extension that works perfectly fine on the same computer, same Firefox, but in a different profile?

Hi, for one I would not trust something that had not been updated since 2010, that's 7yrs with out any security updates for it.

As to it running in 1 Profile and not the other, no idea. Could be a glitch in the add-on

Have you tried just Firefox Proxy or using another Proxy Program from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/extensions/

Not sure you want to go with a Refresh and having to put yourself back together again.

What about creating another Profile and see if it works in the new one as the one you are using may have some corruption to it. If it does then can migrate some of your stuff to the new Profile.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Indeed, I tend to be careful when it comes to complex extensions, but this one couldn't get much simpler: it's a mere shortcut to the proxy preference pane in Firefox, and only allows for two significant settings: proxy type, and whether to turn it on when starting Firefox. A toggle, really.

I just tried Fire Proxy (basic version), but it is still more complicated than QuickProxy.
