I tried "Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings", but it wiped my passwords.

After 15y of use (under linux) since couple of months firefox takes about 30-50sec to start a new window. All other windows get blocked, bookmarks are not accessible. It also takes long when it auto completes the URL, so I was thinking that sqlite files got too big. The files (my home profile is on NFS, but connection is 1G). I tried "Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings", but it wiped my passwords. I restored my backup, but I need a way to clean up old and obsoleted stuff and keep my passwords, bookmarks and settings. I guess there is somekind of problem related to the passwords.

regards

It's hard to judge what's going on from this unfortunate data loss experience. Do you have a lot of patience? You could create a new profile and gradually migrate files over to it in order of importance. I would think saved logins would be first (or second after bookmarks). If you use Sync, don't connect the new profile to your Firefox account as that may affect the test results.

New Profile Test

Inside Firefox, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.

Click the Create a New Profile button, then click Next. Assign a name like Feb2018, ignore the option to relocate the profile folder, and click the Finish button.

After creating the profile, scroll down to it and click the Set as default profile button below that profile, then scroll back up and click the Restart normally button. (There are some other buttons, but please ignore them.)

Firefox should exit and then start up using the new profile, which will just look brand new. If Firefox prompts to approve extensions, skip over those for now.

How is Firefox's performance with default settings and empty data files?

This article lists the names and purposes of various files in your profile folder: Recovering important data from an old profile.

When you are done with the experiment, open the about:profiles page again, click the Set as default profile button for your normal profile, then click the Restart normally button to get back to it.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting to make the change effective.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

You can check if you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case the Refresh feature in Firefox has been used and a new profile has been created.

For Firefox 58+ you would need logins.json and key4.db (key3.db was used previously) to recover passwords.
