If I open a downloaded PDF in Firefox, an endless stream of new tabs open.

In Windows 10 on my desktop, using Firefox, when I click on a link to open a download, the down-arrow turns blue on the tab in the Firefox toolbar for showing the progress of downloads. When I click on this, and choose a PDF, a menu appears for apps to open it. The default opening app is a component of the Microsoft Edge browser. This works OK, but only through starting up Edge on top of Firefox (the browser I normally use). If I change the default to Firefox, to avoid running two browsers, and open in Firefox, all that happens is an endless stream of new tabs opening—perhaps 2 or 3 a second. The only way to stop it is by shutting down the whole computer.

I notice that the PDFs with this problem have the Edge logo attached. So I wonder whether Microsoft has embedded some code in them to sabotage any attempt to use non-Microsoft opening software. Microsoft appears to have done something similar by booby-trapping Word documents to foil attempts to open them with Libre Office.

Perhaps I am paranoid and do Microsoft an injustice here. But anyhow, is there a way to get round this problem, other than running Edge on top of Firefox?
