Firefox 55 doesn't access my history or bookmarks
...I upgraded my Firefox browser today to version 55.0, but when I restarted it, it wouldn't access any of the details of the Profile I use all the time... I have looked repeatedly, and there is never any History, either pre-existing, or newly created, and my Bookmarks and Fast Dial add-on aren't available... When I try to log into a site, however, it still remembers my Password data, and that is visible in the Options : Saved Logins popup... I had a similar experience with Firefox Developer Edition, and I finally gave up, and switched to regular Firefox, but I'm now running out of options!! I am running Windows 10, on a Laptop with a 6GHz processor

great - we now think that the ' (apostrophe) in the path is playing into the problem and working on a fix for that. thank you for your help!

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

....that looks promising.... I wondered if it might be something in that neighbourhood.... It'll take a while to study that all, and try some experiments, but I'll get there, I'm sure.... Interestingly, I installed a 32-bit copy of version 54, and it works great ...in fact, it even found my login to Mozilla Support right away.... Thanks again, for the quick response; I'll get back to you once I'm on the winning track again...
Hmm, maybe it's a problem with switching from 32-bit Firefox 54 (if that's what you had before) to 64-bit Firefox 55?
...thanks, I had already upgraded to 64-bit FF54, and it worked fine.... I appreciated the amazing speed, and was looking forward to the FF55 update... I have since uninstalled all Firefox installations (I had re-installed FF54 32-bit, and it worked fine, while my parallel FF55 64-bit didn't work properly)... I have since renamed every sqlite.places file that I could find, eliminated my Profiles startup, and am working through the reading.... Nothing seems to be working yet, though....

....out of curiosity, I downloaded an SQLite Viewer, and had a look at the current places.sqlite database file... It showed all "0"s, and no data written to the File.... When I looked at my older places.sqlite files, they had data written into them, and appeared to be intact.... Can anyone give me any insights into possible "security software" issues that may be interfering with the use of this file? I have Avast Antivirus Free running on my laptop, and I am considering removing Malwarebytes Antimalware that I had installed only recently....
If you have the full featured premium Malwarebytes, try changing the settings for the Anti-Exploit module to exclude Firefox and see whether that makes any difference.
As far as I know, the problems caused by Avast are nothing like this...

....I did try booting into Windows Safe Mode, with Network Support, because I was curious, too... Well, I'm getting consistent results; that didn't work either!! I'm trying to decide if I should try writing some data to the places.sqlite file, to see if the data shows up in my "Library" windows or not... Also wondering if my Profiles Folder is in the right place, or if I need to look for another one somewhere.... Can anybody tell me if the Code for Firefox has some other "qualifier" before it can write data to the places.sqlite file??
Do you notice any indication that the update didn't complete successfully? In one thread, the user was on the Troubleshooting Information page* and clicked the Show Update History button and discovered that Firefox 55 didn't have an entry indicating that it installed successfully. In another thread, the user reported that Firefox kept insisting that it needed to restart to finish the installation, but that never actually worked.
* That's the page you can call up using any of these, and the button is in the first table of Application Basics:
- "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
- (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
- type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
if there's any indication that the update didn't fully apply affected users could also try a clean reinstall:
- download the full firefox setup file from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
- uninstall firefox on the machine
- manually delete all remaining files in the firefox program folder, which usually resides in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\
- reinstall firefox
...okay, friends.... I've had to bite the bullet and re-install FF54, and I was able to locate an archived 64-bit version.... Bookmarks, I haven't checked, but the History Library is working properly.... I will continue to experiment with Firefox 55 and up versions, and try to find out what is messing me up, but I'd like to have a functional browser, in the meantime... Appreciate the suggestions, and I will continue to experiment; it's been difficult to stump me in the past..... btw, I am still impressed with the speed of the 64-bit edition!! ...I consider Mozilla's declaration that "...some security software" may cause this, to be a bit ambiguous.... Do they have specific experience, or should I just start dumpstering "security software" to find a solution?? I have deliberately loaded lots of software of all kinds, to reflect my varying interests, and find it unusual that this would just "pop up" at this particular level...

one more question: when you type "about:profiles" into your firefox address bar what is the full path of your profile shown in the root folder column?
...thanks for you Question, Phillipp... The address I copied from the Root column was C:\Users\JackE's Laptop\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\dklyaolu.default .... It was identified as the Profile in use... I think it's in the right place; I have a number of other profiles, including one for Firefox Developer Edition, Version 56... This one doesn't work, where the other, which is Version 54, has a functional places.sqlite file....
The Profile for the Firefox Developer Edition is located at C:\Users\JackE's Laptop\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\pqhle07d.dev-edition-default ....I just realized that this may not be the right place....
The Default Profile places.sqlite has a size of 10,240 KB, while the Developer Edition one has the "original filesize" of 32 KB....

...it turns out there are two profiles only, one for FF v54, and one for Firefox Developer Edition, v56... When I tried to check the Profiles, only the v54 Profile would be selected, regardless of which version I started... I was able to "set" the other one as Default, but it still didn't work in v56 Dev Edition... When I checked the integrity of the Dev Edition places.sqlite file, it showed a "failed" report... When I switched back to FF v54, it didn't select the correct database file, and showed no History or Bookmarks (which I had created previously. I was able to create a History, by manually entering some URLs, and opening them in tabs.. When I switched back to Dev Edition v56, nothing showed in the History... I subsequently switched the Default Profile back to the correct one, using FF v54, and all of my settings, History and Bookmarks were restored.... I also checked the Dev Edition Profile places.sqlite file, and it had grown to 10,240 KB, presumably by being used by the FF v54 Browser... I had wanted to attach a copy of the two Integrity Reports, but I can't seem to find a way to attach the file....
....okay, my hat's off to you; thank you very much for your assistance!! After an ill-advised attempt to eliminate the apostrophe from my "User" filename, I remembered that I have one User name on my Laptop that doesn't have an apostrophe in it.... I switched to that User, and found a shortcut for my Firefox Developer Edition (v56), which I then opened up... The History and Bookmarks Libraries were already populated, and they worked properly when I created new History items.... I know that some (particularly Database) systems do not like "non-text" characters, but it was a big surprise to encounter this peculiarity... Thank you again for your time and support.... Jack
