Ignore the outdated table on top of http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html and scroll down to H.264/MP4 video example.
If H.264/MP4 HTML5 videos are not working or properly then chances are you do not have the needed ffmpeg and Gstreamer packages installed for your Linux distro. Though Gstreamer may not be need in future versions of Firefox and just ffmpeg.

I mentioned to ignore that old outdated table on top of the page and to scroll down and try the H.264/MP4 video example. If it works then you have the needed packages installed.
This will help tell you what you are missing https://www.youtube.com/html5/
The ffmpeg and Gstreamer packages would be in your package manager on your Debian Linux distro. packagekit or synaptic or Add Remove Software are gui options I think as you may not like using command line. Never used Debian before including the old Debian 7 you have from May 2013.
