I have installed Win7 on my computer and my Graphic Card driver (Nvidea GeForce Game Ready, Driver Version: 362.00 WHQL, Release Date: 1.3.2016).

When I open a page in firefox, then I noticed that the fonts in general look pixelated and have issues with displaying bold properties.

For example, in the first image, you see on the left how the google "open sans" font is displayed in chrome, and on the right how it is displayed in Firefox. Also the Image second shows the difference in Firefox and Chrome for open sans. I also noticed that the IE 8 has the same issue as Firefox.

Also, I have Firefox on my Laptop using Ubuntu version 39.0 and the font works well there.

I know that everything was working well on my computer before I reinstalled Win 7. I reinstalled Win 7 another time to see if anything went wrong during installation, but the problem remains. I also tried an older Nvidea driver (Verson 355.82) but the problem still remains.

I have posted this question also here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35869208/open-sans-pixelated-in-firefox-under-win7?noredirect=1#comment59403452_35869208

Is there a reason why open sans is not displayed correctly in Firefox?

I have clear type enabled (https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/1002008) and I switched hardware acceleration on/off (https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/943289) and I tried to enable WIndows Firewall ( I can't find the link anymore but someone was able to fix font issues with his FIrewall somehow).

I had to install all Windows Updates, then everything worked fine.

I thought they were all installed, but I was wrong. There where problems why automatic updates didn't work.

You can right-click and select "Inspect Element" to open the Inspector ("3-bar" menu button or Tools > Web Developer) with this element selected. You can check the font used for selected text in the Font tab in the right pane of the Inspector.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Thank you.

If I inspect the element, it shows the correct font "Open Sans" but its still not correcly displayed.

I disabled hardware acceleration already, then I went on options-> close firefox so all windwos were closed. Restarting Firefox shows the same problem with the font.

I have currently the latest graphic card driver installed (see my original post) and I have also installed all windows updates. From your last link I also find the advice to try to disabe WebGL - I did that also, without success.

Interesting to note: If I reinstall clean Win7 again the problem remains. I am really surprised, because I did not change anything on my hardware (still running the same graphic card) and I just reinstalled Win7 and now I have this strange error.
