With your latest update, I can no longer use LastPass, TrendMicro, in the toolbar, or FBPurity to clean up the junk I don't have time to see. I get the message that their signatures are not usable, and you disabled them. I can't use Firefox without them, so how do we fix this issue?

This will disable add-on signature enforcement; Enter about:config into your Firefox address bar Click the I'll be careful button Find xpinstall.signatures.required in the list Right click the preference Select Toggle until the value is false https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-on-signing-in-firefox

If I follow these instructions, will TrendMicro still protect from virus, or does this disable that vital service?

You may likely have a older version of Lastpass that has not been signed or updated for Firefox 44. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lastpass-password-manager/versions/

Your separate TrendMicro software is untouched as the message states the version of Extension you have from TrendMicro is not compatible with Firefox 44. Extensions that tie in with antivirus software have to be updated for each new major Firefox Releases.

Your Trend Micro Anti Virus software should continue to work as normal as long as you keep it updated.

If you get any news from Trend Micro about their other related software being updated to work with Firefox please let us know, (include links if you like) as others will be keen to know.

There is an earlier related thread. Maybe someone will post news in that so you may wish to follow

Unlike most Extensions, the ones that antivirus clients install into Firefox needs to be made for each new major Firefox Release. A Extension the antivirus company made for say the previous Firefox 43 will not be compatible with Firefox 44 for example.

Are they (antivirus apps) given a heads up in advance of you launching a new release? or do I have to go through months of issues, and switching over to Chrome or another browser like I did this time? Not to mention the hours and hours I spent on the phone with Trend Micro and they taking control of my computer to be able to make Firefox compatible with their app (or vice versa).

I really like the Firefox browser best, but that is a serious issue that you absolutely know needs attention and should not be up to the end user to have to deal with. I know if it happens again, I'm gone! I cannot use a browser where I cannot be protected from virus and malware, etc.

Yes, the anti-virus companies should know that a new release might break their Firefox add-on. There was an announcement in Feb 2015 about "signing" coming to Firefox on the Firefox Add-ons blog and another announcement in April 2015 with further information. Plus each new version of Firefox goes thru an 18 week development process of 3 pre-release versions of 6 weeks each that anyone can download and use so that add-ons can be tested for compatibility with the upcoming new release.

IMO, any company that isn't aware of what may or may not be compatible with a new version of Firefox is poorly managed or ignoring their responsibility's to there clients. All they need to do is "test" their stuff before each version of Firefox is released and fix their stuff ahead of time rather than waiting for their clients to report problems with their stuff.

And the real sad thing it that those add-ons are usually just duplicating features that are already built into Firefox - IOW, those add-ons add very little value or benefit to the user's Firefox experience vs the aggravation they produce for the user.

dori36 I know this is hard to take in because there are several factors to consider. I thought it worth trying to summarise them.

Vital components, and bundled components.

  • Anti Virus [AV] software is generally regarded as vital.
It is usual good practice to have some sort of AV, whether that is free or paid for, especially on Windows PCs
    • You choose to pay for TrendMicro AV. That should work as long as you continue to pay and continue to update it.
    • Windows ordinary user often get something free from Microsoft.
    • I am not sure if anything much is available free for a Mac.
Clam AV|Xav may be worth looking into: wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam_AntiVirus#Mac_OS_X

A one off Change in Firefox policy (Signing).

This is the signing the-edmeister refers to. And the signature issue in your question heading. Note in addition to the announcements it was phased in so endusers get warnings initially. Some free add-ons may not be actively supported and may not update an meet these conditions. Any paid for software should not be expected to have problems, that should be actively supported.

  • See this help article Add-on signing in Firefox
( Advanced users may be able to override signing in Fx44 -at their own risk. )

Different categories of third party software include

  • Free extensions mainly hosted on addons.mozilla.org/firefox
These will now need to be signed
  • Free utilities or Tools bundled with Security software. the-edmeister commented on them. If these are Firefox extensions they will need to be signed. These are usually made available only to users of the core AV software and need to be updated for each Firefox version.
  • Applications or Programs separate from Firefox. (Some of these may work as plugins with Firefox) These do not need signing

LastPass There appears to be a signed but possibly not well supported version

Glancing at that it seems it may be getting out of date. Possibly it is used mainly to promote other premium products

Now it would be getting outside the scope of this forum to discuss alternative free password managers you could do a web search or start from this article wikipedia.org/wiki/Password_manager
