How do I stop Firefox from showing the tablet version of a site instead of the desktop version?

I recently updated my site's hosting plan in Adobe Business Catalyst and now Firefox is showing the tablet version of the site instead of the desktop version.

Both IE and Chrome are functioning correctly. The monitor I'm on is a 19" 1440 X 900 display.

It used to not do this, and I'm unsure what happened.

Please update to the most recent version of Firefox:

Then I might recommend to clear the cache of the sites that are doing this as well.

Make sure that the Firefox window isn't too small. Some websites automatically give you a mobile version when they detect that the browser window is below a specific width (e.g. 1024 may be already too small)

Zooming a page affects the screen dimensions reported by JavaScript. You may have zoomed web page(s) by accident. Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

  • View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))

I suspect the zoom level is the main issue, but you also might try clearing cache and cookies in case this setting has become stuck and is no longer adapting properly to your resolution.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Thanks for all the replies. I had already tried clearing the cache. I did find that I needed an update, so did that and cleared cache afterwards. It's still going to the tablet version after the update.

I double-checked my zoom settings and they were at 100%, so it's not that.

I know I've made several changes to the site, but all other browsers are showing correctly. In addition, I've checked the site on other computers. The site was functioning properly on all of those in Firefox, so it seems to be some issue with my system.

I also tried jscher2000's suggestion of clearing cookies. It seems that the cookies are telling Firefox to display the desktop version but it's displaying the tablet version for an unknown reason...

Actually, cookies are just a form of temporary storage for sites; sites set the cookies they want to receive from Firefox with future requests, and Firefox sends them to the site. Judging from your screenshot, a script in the page or on the server is judging your system to be a desktop system. Perhaps the problem, then, lies in the style rules? Sites can use media queries to apply different style rules based on various dimensions, and style rules do not check cookies.

If you visit my resolution test page, what dimensions does it show at 100% zoom?

It shows 1440 X 799

IE shows 1440 X 713 as I have more toolbars on it.

Can you post a link to a publicly accessible page (i.e. no authentication or signing on required)?

That would allow us to check how the site works.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "You can use the "View > Sidebar" menu. You can find a "Show sidebars" button in the Customize palette.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize
  • View > Toolbars > Customize
> History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that has effect.

Sorry, I was mixing up your problem with another similar problem where the screen resolution was more borderline.

I notice you are using IIS hosting. Over the years there have been some issues with the browser identification module. Perhaps that is the problem in this case? Here's an old post on that: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/984418#answer-536278

Hi fireflyint, the difference I notice in your screen shot is that for some reason the text content area is not centering, whereas mine does.

And also, the URL in your screen shot has the word "tablet" in it!

That might be an autocomplete from when you tested it once. Unfortunately, Firefox's "in address bar" autofill feature may not always load the URL you think it will. If you want to turn that off:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.autoFill preference to switch it from true to false and see whether you like it better

jscher2000,

Thanks for the help. I tried doing this, but it doesn't seem to help.

The other difference is the navigation bar is different from the actual site. The site is designed in Adobe Muse and hosted in Adobe Business Catalyst.

Thus far, it's only not working correctly on my machine.

If you use a bookmark to open a specific page on the server then try to navigate to that page starting with the main page or the sign in page of the website in case this bookmark is currently broken or has the wrong URL.

Both ideas redirect to the tablet version of the site...

Hi fireflyint, if you follow a link to the main page (like the link you posted for us), is the server redirecting you to the tablet main page instead? I'm not sure why that would happen, unless the server isn't receiving your user agent string properly. Could you also test in a private window, right-click the following link, then Open Link in New Private Window:

http://www.fireflyintegrations.com/

You can try to check the HTTP request and response headers with the Live Http Headers extension to see what page Firefox is requesting and if there is a location redirect.

You can find a LHH toolbar button in the Customize palette and a menu item in the Tool menu.

This is what I get:
